Proper Pronunciation of "Gyro"

Airplanes have gyros pronounced jie-roh.

Greek restaurants have gyros pronounced yeeh-roe.

Don't ask why; it's just the way it is. And you should be thankful for both. When on an airplane, depend on the gyros; they're very accurate. When eating greek, have the gyros; they're delicious (though I prefer light on the cucumber sauce. Some places really drown their gyros in sauce and you can't even taste the meat or the tomato.)

Now y'all've got me thinking about one... and I know a great cart in downtown Portland that's got excellent gyros. Lunch tomorrow...

also called a Doner (donna) Kebab in the UK. Seems to be called Shawarma in Lebanese places in Canada.

Andy, yes the Gyro is known as a Doner Kebab, here, in the UK and it's the Turkish version acccording to wikipedia meaning 'turning roast'

Usually only eaten late at night after a shed load of beers and covered in hot chilli sauce.

Was taken to a Greek restaurant in California and the common pronounciation seemed to be Yee-roh.
