Airplanes have gyros pronounced jie-roh.
Greek restaurants have gyros pronounced yeeh-roe.
Don't ask why; it's just the way it is. And you should be thankful for both. When on an airplane, depend on the gyros; they're very accurate. When eating greek, have the gyros; they're delicious (though I prefer light on the cucumber sauce. Some places really drown their gyros in sauce and you can't even taste the meat or the tomato.)
Now y'all've got me thinking about one... and I know a great cart in downtown Portland that's got excellent gyros. Lunch tomorrow...
