Protecting carbon steel from rust

I'm a knife noobie and just bought a Kabar USMC 7" 1095 cro-van bladed knife.
I recently wiped some petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on the blade to keep it from rusting. The knife is in its sheath and is being stored in my Bug Out Bag.

Am I doing harm to the blade by coating it with the Vaseline? I don't plan on using the knife much which is why I'm designating it for the B.O.B.

Thanks.

Kinda reviving a old thread here, don't care. I left my carbon steel knife out over night and when I woke up in the morning it had rust all over it. And that's with a forced patina even, I even watched rust form on the knife right infront of me. I finally coated it in gun oil and was done with it. I should have never stripped the coating off of it. ( keeping it dry and clean isn't enough)
