Put the first scratch/dent in a $900 custom

Exaclty what happened. I still feel a wee bit of remorse when this happens, even with production Emersons.

Oh, I thought it was somewhat more damage,...but I know how you can feel on even a scratch. I remember when I had my car painted, I almost went toe to toe with the landscapers blowing the leaves near it! hahaha.

By the way guys, I'm a bud and a PAL.

When you get a new car, call me, I got a sledge.

I know stuff eventually gets dinged but I'd never do it on purpose just to get it over with.

My Road Hog carbon steel knife takes it all & just keeps cutting & cutting. Hehhehheh.

But I'm ok with it. My Burn stiletto fell out of my pocket as I was getting up. Put a nice little mark in the butt bolster.
This is one of the reasons I have never purchases a really expensive custom knife. Knives are ment to be used, so I hate the idea of spending all that money and just putting it in the safe. On the other hand, I would be so scared of messing it up I'd be afraid to use it.

Sorry folks, this is a wee bit off topic, but I couldn't help that FlaMtnBkr, your name contradicts itself. It's OK I come from a pancake state too, but it only took me a few years til I realized that jumping over bunny hills in a 18 pound titanium masterpiece just didn't cut it. That is one classy lookin set you have there.

This is true but I didn't name them mountain bikes. Plus some of the trails I have found in Florida are way more technical than ones in the 'mountain' states which many times are almost like an offroad sidewalk and very smooth. Some of the lime rock quarries have some crazy trails going in and out of them. Plenty of challenge even if there aren't any hour long climbs around.

Good for you!
I fight the same problem...I always want to keep my things "mint", but getting older I am starting to get over this...

In fact I just received in today's mail my new CRK Umnumzaan (which is supposed to be a hard use knife anyway) and took it to the garage and just started cutting up boxes etc just to try it our....telling myself "This will NOT be another safe queen"

Getting older I figure..life is short, why keep anything in mint condition...hell, I'm not in mint condition, why should I keep my knives that way! :D

CM, you should have stuck to your roots and posted this in W&C...;)

I know how you feel though, now that this whole use it or not use it issue has been solved the knife can be used to its full potential. In a way it makes you feel good doesnt it?:D

While I don't intentionally scratch my stuff, I'll use a new knife hard when I see the opportunity to accomplish the same feeling of officially turning it into a user.

RE setting the first scratch yourself deliberately: why not carry out Murphys law on purpose it gives a measure of control and relief.
