"I don't see what everyone's getting so worked up about. The water's fine."
Yes, my state recently put up proposed hunting law changes which included banning all lead and removing more game from the hunt able species list.

I put in a submission opposing everything, supported with facts and questioning the existence of empirical evidence supporting their proposed changes.

They took another species of duck from us, banned lead from quail hunting but did not ban it for deer hunting.

Every couple of years it's something new.

As a hunter, I do find Australia to be very difficult to deal with, at least relatively so as compared to most states in the USA. It's unfortunate.

It was all set in motion before my lifetime, mind you we never established our independence from Britain the same way you did so we have no constitution and guns/self defence was never specifically addressed. Guns themselves are considered a privilege, we have no rights to them.

The problem as I see it, 95% of Australians live in major cities or within a short distance of them. It's become a very urbanised country where people aren't exposed to guns, hunting etc. And they easily buy into hysteria.

We get one shot at life, I don't see how the government can determine the limits I have to protect it. Some states are worse than others, I'm in one of the worst. I've been trying to move for 13 years but my gf/wife has been a stick in the mud.

Screw it, here's an egregious example:

Two guys tried busting down a blokes door (he did shag one of their gf's) all the while screaming that they were going to kill him. Shitting himself he grabbed a kitchen knife and when one did break open the door and come at him he stabbed the guy and killed him.
He was then charged for excessive force because they were unarmed. Never mind they could have beaten him to death and were planning and threatening to do so.

I have a wife and three kids with the fourth due in a few weeks. I will protect them at all costs, come what may.

Reminds me of an old case from the UK where a 78 year old man was charged with murder after killing a burglar in self defense:

Legally, things eventually turned out well for the old man, but I recall him and his wife suffering severe harassment from supporters of the burglars who took the absolutely baffling stance that "They were just trying to rob the old couple, he didn't have to kill him."

Having said all that about self defence and those proposed changes, we still have a lot of freedom when it comes to hunting. More than in the states in some instances.

I'm a deer hunter - we have a 12 month season in my state, no tag limits, no weapon specific seasons and over 20 million acres of public land.
You could come and hunt here for the price of a licence with a bow, rifle or muzzleloader.
The native animals are were it's far too restrictive.

And a quirky one, for all the restrictions we have we can still privately import a firearm from the US by filling out a single form.
I tried getting a custom flintlock and had the forms and shipping all sorted, just couldn't find a smith willing to build me one!
I know a guy that visits the states every couple of years, most trips he takes the prefilled form over with him, buys a gun and brings it back into the country.

The thing is, once you get away from the cities people are reasonable and because we're scarcely populated we have a lot of freedom in the country/rural areas.
I live near a town of 20,000. The next town of equal or bigger size is 120 miles away - and I'm in the secons most populated state of the country.

We have those mentalities right here in the US. “He wuz a good boy. He dindu nuffin wrong. They didn’t have to kill him”. Just a little armed robbery with a stolen gun. 🙄

It's not usually done in one fell swoop. It's little by little.

It's crazy the mindset that some people have. They think there's no need to be able to defend themselves.

I work at a pretty woke company and have talked to some people like that. They've never been in a fist fight, no physical confrontation. They've never seen first hand or experienced physical violence so it's so distant from their mind that it doesn't seem like a possibility.

You should see the look on their face when I explain to these types that the only thing that stops me from smashing them in the face when they "upset" me, is manners. "That's illegal though. I'd just call the police.", they reply. I explain, "That's after the fact. All that means is that I'm punished after I'm done beating you for 5 to 10 minutes before the police arrive. That's only if I decide to let you call them while I'm kicking you in the face on the ground. That's why being able to defend yourself is important."

We've had it too good, for too long. The "it won't happen to me" mindset spreads. Naivety and gullibility is contagious; idiotic statements and notions spread like viruses.

What did HR think about those statements? 😁 (Oh, you must be HR)

I have found that women do better when learning both rock climbing and shooting, since they actually listen, absorb the info and don't try to "muscle up" the solution. (I know it's a broad generality, but it's something that has come up in prior discussions on those two topics.)

When we were visiting Rob Simonich, (rest in peace), in Montana, he taught my wife how to shoot a revolver and a rifle, and it was a joy to see how good an eye she had, despite never having picked up a gun previously.

I want my wife to take a defensive pistol class, but she is not interested at all. She goes to the gun range about once every 4-5 years, shoots one bullseye on the first shot, and goes, "Meh, this is not fun, I'm done". It's about time to drag her to the range again...

Also, with the liberal left forcing NRA safety and Eddie Eagle out of schools and communities over the years, we have less influence on teaching gun safety to the kids of knuckleheads that "grew up with guns" and refuse training for themselves and their progeny.

I watch the antics of these kids on YouTube as they become teens, and it's terrifying the lack of respect for the dangers of firearms by young and old people these days. Just look here for proof.

GUN FAILS

My wife's not interested in firearms either. But I have explained and demonstrated for her what to do in case of an emergency and walked the steps with her of what the available options are. I try to keep it simple so that in a high stress situation, the steps required are minimal and easy to follow.

MI used to have similarly stupid laws. “Duty to retreat” even when someone has broken into your home.

“Level of force used must be proportional”, like the above, if they’re unarmed, you can’t be armed (2-on-1. Younger aggressors vs smaller, older victims. Disparity of force. Hello?). “Oh, you put down your baseball bat because it looked like they were unarmed, but they were hiding a knife? Too bad, so sad. Tough shit for you”.

We finally got Castle Doctrine in 2007 (2008?), where use of deadly force is allowed to defend yourself from potential harm, anywhere someone makes illegal forced entry into an occupied roofed dwelling (so an attached garage counts, along with the house itself, of course. And even a tent, if you’re camping somewhere legally).

Had one just a few years ago. Some drugged up nutjob was kicking and banging on a woman’s back door, trying to force entry despite her yelling at the guy to go away, and that she was on the phone with the police. He continued trying to break in the back door, and the 911 call recorded her yelling, “I have a gun! Stop trying to get in or I’ll shoot!”. He continued and she shot him through the door, citing that she was afraid the door was about to be breached. No charges filed.

That’s effectively where my states laws are.

We had a case this year a couple hours away where a lone woman jogging went missing. Ended up a guy had killed her.

I thought it might provoke thoughts on personal protection such as pepper spray or knives…nope. They went down the men are evil, toxic masculinity path and did rallies against violence against women.

My wife used to be all along those lines, I’ve finally got through to her that Utopia doesn’t exist and there will always be a percentage of the population that are bad.

Good, the system can work.

Anyway all we can do is bring up the next generation the right way, I’ve got 3 boys and the fourth is a boy too. We’ve got r3cord numbers of shooters and the highest number of guns in private ownership in the countries history. I’ll do my bit to make sure my Boys continue the traditions.

If I'm on my property, minding my own business, and someone comes here intending me harm, I will kill them.

Laws go this way and that way. Your rights and the laws that apply to you depend on what side of an imaginary line you stand on. One state or country says, that's fine, another says you go to jail for defending yourself. It makes it difficult for a rational person to respect any particular law when they are so arbitrary. The laws of man have been more consistent over time.

At the end of the day, modern laws are like an HOA mandate. Scribblings on paper.

We all have responsibilities and there are mandates that go beyond the written words of your local ordinance. You do what you need to do to protect yourself and those under your protection.

It's tragic, the old folks who get tied up in all of this bullshit. That's the real crime. The lives of criminals really do not matter and the lives of the people affected by them really do. People need to do better, providing rights for the innocent victims better than the rights of the criminals.
