Has anyone had any experience with ranger knives?

How tough ar ethey? Do they live up to their hype? Any thoughts on the steel they use. I havent heard much talk of them, but they seem solid.

I have 3 Ranger knives, one is a neck knife. They are most excellent and very solid knives!! You get a whole lot of knife for the money. I have an Rd 6 & a custom RD 4. I can not say enough good stuff about them.

I've been using the RD-9 this past 2 weeks to clear pole-sized trees, (hemlocks, maples and alders) limb'em and "buck" them up to smaller sizes. I took 10 minutes to file away a sharp corner or 2 on the handle when I got it but it went right to work. What you get for $110 bucks or so is a very good tool with a convex grind that'll hold an edge very well and fits in a scabbard on your hip without dragging on the ground or dragging your pants down. The finish flakes off fairly easily, but I don't care, and the edge comes right back to very sharp. I just wish I'd had one of these before. A very good working blade that does most of what a machete does and pinch hits well for a hatchet.

I have been thinking about a Ranger RD9 myself--due to people's glowing reviews mostly. Can anyone tell me how a Ranger might compare to say a Swamp Rat? I'm looking for a good, all-round camp/utility/fighter-if-needed-type knife since I've had to sell my ENTIRE custom collection--goodbye Fitch, Caffrey, Mick Strider, Winkler, Crowell, Shiva, Fowler, etc....GAWD I feel sorry for myself!! :grumpy: Any input is great appreciated! Best Regards--Jim Falor SEMPER FI

I bought a full flat ground RD9 awhile back, and it was a great knife--it's very thick and heavy--just as it should be. I ended up selling it off due to a lust for a Browning Hi Power--don't regret doing it, now I just will have to buy another RD9.

Biggest difference is you can get a new Ranger. Right now. No couple of month wait til they start production again and whatnot.

Here's mine:

I will respectfully question that. I've been waiting now @2.5 months for an RD7. I'm still waiting.

Did you order it from Sage Creek or directly through Justin? If it was Sage then you may want to contact Justin directly and see what he says. YMMV

RD6 for a couple of months now, and have had it out a few times in the back bush trimming up some branches and it does just fine..Nice weight, so it will do some decent chopping and so far it's staying pretty sharp..
Great knife, and want a RD7 and 9 now...

Hey Oilman..

Is that one of my sheaths in your Avatar ??

Sounds like a stocking issue. What does Sage Creek say? I ordered the RD-9 from Sage Creek via internet form a little over 2 weeks ago and got it in 3 days, standard UPS.

To tell you the truth I don't know. I went through 4 or 5 of the Basic 9s and that one came with an extra aftermarket sheath that the dealer said cost him $40 but he didn't say who made it. I've also got a kydex sheath for the one I kept but I'm not sure who made that one either. Me dum. Sorry.:)

Thanks much for the input. I guess I COULD wait a few months for a SRKW but my lack of steel requires quick gratification--if not instant. I have my Severtech to play with but I need something with a bit more reach. Sage Creek--here I come. Jim SEMPER FI

I have no reason to distrust them to bypass them. I hear they have a rather good reputation.

Sage Creek says they're in contact with Justin, and they're waiting themselves.

Ok tahnks all i guess they are some tough as nails fixed blades. Now ive just got to decide between ranger, rat, or scrapyard.

Get the Ranger. Really good knife, really good customer service, really good pricing. :)
