Recon 1, in MagnaCut

Looks like the Magnacut Recon 1 will be made in Italy. I’m not excited about that, because I trust the Taiwan manufacturer’s heat treat but Italian made knives in “super steels” are often on the softer side in my experience.

Edit: Also, that sharpening choil looks weird. The choil and the edge remind me of how some of the counterfeits look. If they counterfeit these they may be even harder to tell apart, when you consider the choil, edge, and newer matte black PVD coating vs the shinier DLC they used to use. When I first saw this image my brain said “fake”, but it isn’t.

The newer PVD coatings are not as nice as the old DLC coatings, without getting into the specifics. They look thinner and have a dull matte appearance. Some well known companies call this DLC, but that’s not accurate. The picture is a snap shot of a recent Cold Steel YouTube video.

Is the minimum performance difference with the 35VN worth the extra 120+ pricetag?

The eternal question! I would say its the steel choices that keeps us coming back. I have a ParaMilitary in Magnacut and its definitely a great steel.

I am surprised at the premium on this, though, as CS's prices are typically very reasonable. Would obviously prefer that it wasn't THAT much more.

Maybe they will come out with other blade shape and handle colors in the future.

It's kinda weird. S35vn is sorta in the same ballpark as Magnacut in my opinion. A stainless steel that is pretty tough and corrosion resistant.

I don't see the price jump offering enough value for the relatively minute differences.

Also food for thought.

When they switched from AUS8A, to CTS-XHP, then to S35VN the price stayed flat.
true....the magancut one so far is made in Italy isn't it? so higher costs there. not sure on having to import or not the magnacut steel..maybe? maybe higher costs. all that aside.....gsm was always gonna try to get as much as they could for it. that's no real surprise.

I'd like a recon 1 lite. back in aus8 or even aus10. still g10 scales though and tri'ad and Taiwan made of course..and priced lower than the typical cost.

Good point... I didn't factor in the made in Italy part.

Is there any differences in the end product besides the steel choice?

not that I can think of......

somewhat higher price I'd expect for magnacut and euro labor rates. double plus price....thats just gsm being gsm......

I admit the higher price is a big turn-off but it seems Magnacut does command a premium wherever it appears.

Ka-Bar/Becker just did a BK2 Campanion in MC and its going for $244! That's without any upgrade to the scales.

That knife normally sells for $120.
