I've recently went back to freehanding after years of using the sharpmaker. I use my spyderco fine benchstone or my razor edge fine and I seem to get smoother and sharper edges. Don't really know why.

I start by freehanding with a dmt of the appropriate grit, then finish with the sharpmaker, or finish with a convex.

Like you robert, I go back to freehanding on sandpaper/foam every now and then. My success rate isn't as high (I mean, we could train chimps to use the sharpmaker)...but when the results are good I'm much more satisfied. I've yet to see a knife that doesn't look better with a convex edge anyways, but that is a personal thing. I'm holding out to see if "Santa" brings anything from the DMT store. Either way, I'm graduating from sandpaper this winter and jumping off the deep end!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! ...and keep the Benydril handy for them kids!lol
