Remington 783 in .308 Win --- With Stock Upgrade

Rob_Mob, did you end up buying a 783?

Here's mine after finally receiving it and mounting my scope. Contrary to what is written on the internet, a Remington 700 set of bases will NOT fit on the 783. If you go with Leupold, you have to get the bases for the Savage 110 and these will fit perfectly for the 783.

Anyway, like I mentioned (and recommended) in my previous post, I went with the Zeiss Terra 3-9x42. The glass on this thing is amazing, honestly, possibly better than my higher-end Leupold scope that I have on my main rifle. I may end up swapping them.

Can't give you guys a range report yet as I haven't taker her out (hoping for Sunday) but initial impressions on this rifle are pretty good. I love the Mossy Oak Breakup stock and the ergonomics are almost perfect for me. I adjusted the trigger down to 3 pounds and it feels nice, not awesome, but nice. It should smooth out a little more over time though. Not a fan of the 90-degree bolt throw but oh well. Overall I'm pretty happy and looking forward to seeing what it can do at 100-400 yards.

And of course, some photos....

Jonny
That's a beautiful rifle.
I've been shopping for a new optic for one of my .308's and hasn't considered the Zeiss, I'll check them out-thanks.

Let us know how it shoots.

Hey Johnny!

That rifle looks great man. I looked up the optics after you originally posted about it and I'm definitely sold on it. That will be my next present to myself. I just want to order a nice stock that's rigid and weighty enough to sufficiently improve felt recoil and increase accuracy. The Boyd's stocks are really aesthetically and functionally nice. So I'll probably start there. I'm planning on taking this rifle out for its first range trip next weekend. I'm going to test it with the factory stock and scope to get a feel and then I'll swap in the new stock. I'm still drooling in anticipation of the new optics I'm planning on slapping on, but I'm trying to be patient.

Tell us how it shoots, how you zero'd it, how long it took, how hot the barrel got after consecutive shots, and any other impressions. Thanks man!

Well its been almost a year now, thought I'd check in on this thread. How's your 783 coming along there Rob_Mob? I never gave you a range report so I guess I'll do it now. As mentioned in my earlier post, I shoot Hornady's 165gr SST round in my main rifle (Thompson Center Venture) because I absolutely love the terminal ballistics of it and so I was hoping to use the same stuff in my 783. Unfortunately, the 783 just could not, for whatever reason, stabilize that round. I had the rifle secured in a shooting vise and my shots were still all over the place. And I mean ALL OVER the place. So, after buying a box of Hornady American Whitetail ammo in 150 grain and heading back to the range a few days later, I was happy to see my shots grouping between 1 and 1.5 inches. That's good enough for me for a $350 rifle and it only took a few more shots to zero it dead on at 100 yards. Weird how different barrels like different ammo but thats the way it is.

Anyway, fast forward to deer season just this past month here in California and on opening day I took a coworker out hunting with me. The trusty Thompson Center was in my hands and I loaned him the 783. And guess what? He shot a nice blacktail buck right in the heart/lung! I ranged him at only 83 yards but it was a nice shot nonetheless and the 783 did its job. Was a great day for sure! The Remington tasted blood on its first day out and it wasn't even by me lol. Of course, neither of us brought a camera that day but I managed to snap a photo of him after we gutted and skinned the buck from an old flip phone I had in the Jeep. Goofy pic I know but you can see the 783 there with its bounty.

Hey Andy!

I'm looking to improve my accuracy and build towards being a reliable 400 yard shot with this platform --- I also would like it to serve as an entry level hunting gun for different game.

I'd say put your money towards a scope upgrade 1st. Very accurate rifle. Mediocre scope. Not a great 400 yard combo.

Great value. Tons of potential for a low price. Thanks for sharing.

I should add, I just ordered a Remington 700 ADL 200th anniversary model in .270 Win. I've always wanted a .270 and this one just looks too good to pass up. They're only making them this year. Thinking of putting a Steiner GS3 2-10x42 on it. Will post pics when it arrives.

Alright so I received my anniversary model 700 ADL last week and just finished mounting the scope today. I didn't get the Steiner GS3 as it was a bit out of my price range at the moment so instead I went with a Nikon Monarch 3 3-12x42. Remington did a great a job on this gun I think its a beautiful rifle. I'm hoping it will shoot tight with the Hornady SST stuff unlike the 783. Also bought a custom leather sling from SR Holsters. Absolutely gorgeous --- cheers on a GREAT acquisition!!!

Thanks fellas. I don't hide the fact that the .308 is my absolute favorite caliber for hunting but I have always felt incomplete without a nice wood stock .270 in my gun cabinet. I was very much considering the Weatherby Vanguard Sporter as well but the Remington ultimately won out. Looking forward to taking down some big game with it.

Very nice stock and scope upgrade Rob. Here's a pic of my recent purchase. I too got a killer deal, $600 for this Rem 700 30-06 with the VX-2 Leupold 3-9x50....couldn't resist. Happy hunting brother.

Just beating my own drum a little here. If you want to shoot 400 yds , sign up with Project Appleseed. Marksmanship at 400 yds is their goal. They can actually teach you a lot with a Ruger 10/22 before you start burning thru that more expensive 308 ammo.

..... .308 is mostly my choice as well. My other is .300Win (mine is an early 1980s Weatherby Vanguard). My best mate has hunted with a .270Win (Ruger77 that was rebuilt from a shot out 30/06) since we were teenagers.

Nice Rob... I too just purchased a budget Savage Axis 308 and was contemplating the stock upgrade but it's really only for hunting and like Andy said, I don't want to put a ton of money into it especially if it's going to add to the weight of the rifle. Nice gun though, and if you're going to use it for hunting I'd just take it as it is.
