Reputable Lipstick Knife??

Hey guys, my female neighbor has been having problems with this guy and I wanted to get her knife she could keep w/ her. I don't think she'd want something that was obviously a knife so I was wondering if you guys knew of any reputable companies(i.e. Kershaw, Spyderco, Benchmade, etc..) that made a Lipstick knife or another knife disguised as a product a woman would use. I didn't find anything for "Lipstick" at newgraham or knifecenter and when I froogle'd it, all I really found were no-name brands.

For self-defense purposes, a no-name brand is what you'll probably have to settle for. For slashing and stabbing in self-defense, even a butter knife is better than nothing.

As far as finding a Spyderco/Kershaw/Benchmade, it's not like there is a high demand for S30V lipstick blades with G-10 frames for EDC. You are talking about a device that has 1 use and 1 use only...defense.

I don't think you're going to find any "reputable" manufactures offering that sort of thing. I would stick with a more traditional knife, or some form of defense spray. Don't forget to check your local laws either. Oh, and has your neighbor contacted the police about these "problems"?

Yea I think she did contact the police, either last night or this morning. I don't think that she would really have to use it, it would be more for peace of mind and to scare the f***** off if anything happened. I'm thinking a cheap lipstick knife would probably do it but I was just wondering if there was a good company, just because the reputable companies know what they are doing and even if its a few bucks more, I know there is more testing and design behind it. But realistically, a no-name brand might work now that I've thought about it some more. Thanks for the responses guys.

Hey Guys...

These types of Disguised knives are more than likely illegal in most places..As is the icepick in the hairbrush.

Not only that,, All that I have seen are garbage....

Get her a decent little folder to use,, and contact the proper people about "guy problems" which sometimes turn into rape and murder problems..

I would also recommend some type of pepper spray for self defense. A woman can use it from a safer distance - to use a knife you have get awful close to an attacker and that raises the risk of having it taken away from her by a stronger individual. I suppose they are better than nothing but a small knife makes a lousy self defense weapon for a woman.

 Might want to watch the vulgarity in the general forums.

IMO, I would stay away from those lipstick/hairbrush types of knives as they are never looked at fondly by law enforcement.
If it's just to scare off the guy, why not go with something huge like a sword or machete. Something bigger rather than not would most likely scare off anyone who felt they couldn't get within arms reach.

I second the spray. A disguised knife could be legal trouble for her, plus an untrained person trying to fight with a knife could lead to all kinds of bad things. Maybe consider the spray, a stinger, and a real knife for a last resort self defense tool.

She's already got pepper spray chillin in her car that another friend of her's gave her but I wanted to give her something that somebody wouldn't think twice about if they saw first hand. But you do have a good point with the fact that the lipstick knife might be illegal but I highly doubt it. There was one mentioned in this thread by tripz. BTW, I may seem like an idiot for asking this question but what does "EDC" stand for?

The most common knife that I have seen women carry is a paring knife tucked into their purse. A paring knife properly sharpened makes an excellent defencive cutter. Many women balk at the idea of carrying a folding knife as they see these as masculine, but most women are familiar with kitchen cutlery.

Lipstick knives are trash . . . flimsy novelty items. Tell her to carry pepperspray . . . or keep half a brick in the bottom of her purse.

Gotaction, California is one of the jurisdictions that specifically bans any knife that is devised to look like something else. Lipstick knives are illegal where you live.

If she would feel better about carrying a small knife, consider a Spyderco Spot or better yet, a HideAway Knife (HAK). The Utility HAK isn't too expensive, and it would be pretty hard for anyone to disarm her of it.

But frankly, if the bad guy gets close enough for her to use it, she's already lost, in the sense that the threat's gotten way out of hand. Pursue legal options agressively: police, lawyer if necessary, court orders. Make a case against him. THEN if he does confront her and she slices his face open, she won't be the one going to jail for it.

Thanks, good to know, changes things. Like I said, she's already got pepper spray and I haven't even really talked to her about the knife idea but I was going to have her borrow my chive for right now. We'll see how comfortable she is with that. Pepper spray would probably be her first option anyways for all of you that have mentioned that but I just wanted to toss the knife idea out there. Thanks everyone for your input.

For the pepper spray, I would use Mace Pepper Foam or Gel. Nasty stuff and less chance of her getting back spray.

As for the lipstick knife... She'd be down, injured or dead before she could deploy it. Plus, what happens if she grabs the wrong lipstick case? "Stand back or I'll make you a drag queen". Sorry to crack a joke, but that's what those lip stick knives are. Get her a decent folder, one that she WILL carry. Make sure she gets familiar with it too and keeps it handy as most women have tons of useless things that can block access to the knife.

How about a stun gun? Have you heard those things zap!!, that would make me think twice, and they can be had for $20. You could also look at a taser, but they are expensive.

A stun gun isn't all that effective, and suffers from the same basic defect as a knife -- she has to be in contact with him to use it. She doesn't want him anywhere near her.

Tasers aren't always effective either, and would also be a problem deploying, and untrained personnel with complicated equipment do not produce optimal results.

Using a knife for SD would be my last resort. If you don't know what you are doing, the offending person could take it from you and that's it. If you still insist in using a knife or any weapon for that matter, you better be sure that you have used all your options up before using deadly force - especially if the offending person is unarmed.

She could always go with a well trained dog. Something that would at least make enough noise to draw attention.

Pepper spray is the best bet but if she wants to carry a knife the Bark River Mikro-Canadian's make great purse knives and they come hair popping sharp.(only 5" overall length)

Make no mistake; if she pulls a knife, she will have to use it quick, while she has the element of surprise. Otherwise, she will only piss him off, and have the knife turned against her. In the real world there is no scaring then off.
