If your in the EDC Go or NOGO group on facebook, i made a full post about this, what to do if you get caught up in a scam, how to prevent it, etc.
I won't post it here for 2 reasons:
1. rules of the group are not to share info outside of the group (even if its my post)
2. This is a public forum. Educating people here goes both ways. I help to protect the innocent while arming the scammers to do a better job at what they do.
Thats why joining groups like EDC Go or NOGO is the best thing to do to protect yourself.
PP can do what ever they want (almost). But in this case it was the credit card company(or bank)taking back the money, because the card holder said they didn't make the purchase(since resolved). If the credit card company takes back the money from PP they then take it from the seller. This can be covered under PP G&S guarantee, but with FF you have no recourse .This scares the crap out of me, so PayPal can just up and freeze funds because someone said so? Is that not your money? How does this work? Is it that way with Venmo, PayPal G&S , cash app ?

Seems a little disingenuous considering you started this thread asking for our help...and received it.
I understand not wanting to help those with bad intent, but the right thing to do would be to share it with folks likeBoru13 and myself so that as we did in your case, we can help others when the opportunity arises. PM's make that easy.
I have no interest in joining facebook.
This.
You, Karl and Frank deal with plenty of nonsense routinely.
"Thank You" to all of you for the work you do behind the scenes. I'm not sure why you do it, but I'm just glad that you do.
It's a labor of love for sure, but when you can actually do something that helps and has meaning for others...it makes all the b.s. worth putting up with.
Thanks, Coop. That means quite a bit coming from you. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we appreciate it.
Paypal Chargeback Warning - How it happens, how to avoid, and what to do if you are a victim.
I just wanted to make a post to try to educate others in the things I've learned here tonight from the many super helpful members here in EDC Go or NOGO and Blade Forums communities.
Paypal FF is not safe - we all know this, but do we all know just to what extent you can be frauded? PPFF/PPGS, it all makes no difference to chargebacks. If a buyer purchases your $1600 knife and uses a stolen credit card attached to his paypal account, or just flat out claims fraud with his financial institution, this comes as a chargeback to Paypal, and they frankly won't care abour reasons - the bank took money from Paypal, so in turn the money has to come from somebody, and that somebody is you.
How do you know if you got hit with a chargeback? Paypal will send you a message tied with a hold of funds on your account:
"Unauthorized Transaction - Chargeback
Your buyer has filed a chargeback with their financial institution reporting that someone made this transaction without their permission. Until we resolve this issue with the buyer’s financial institution, we’ve placed a hold on the transaction amount."
What to do if this happens to you?
- stay calm. It is possible the buyer had a domestic disconnect with his/her partner/family member. Don't start the flame wars yet. Stay respectful and attempt to contact the buyer. Paypal has a 10 day window to handle the dispute, so you have time. Don't do anything rash that you can't take back, dont start messaging the buyer on paypal or adding escalation posts. Think it through. Attempt to contact the buyer, give it 1-2 days, and if there is still radio silence, go to defcon 2.
-Start collecting data. Data mine the user on google. Pull EVERYTHING. Actual name, address, phone numbers, emails, businesses, etc. This is ammo you can use later while you wait for your buyer to surface.
-Once you are reasonably sure this buyer isn't surfacing, start attempting to pursue this individual. Call places of business, registered home phone numbers, etc. Whatever you can find. And if you reach the individual, be polite and assume it was a mistake. Last thing you want is to anger the holder of your money. Get it resolved and move on if possible.
-Contact Paypal. DO NOT say this was for a purchase if via Friends and family. NEVER mention it was for an auto knife. What you are after is the name of their financial institution. Paypal really won't do much else for you in the attempt of a chargeback, so don't give them any incriminating details that will encourage them to just settle your case up front with a chargeback. Give them NO information while you attempt to collect information from your buyer.
-File a police report. Amount in excess of $500 is considered a felony. warn your buyer up front that you are seeking a civil agreement, but if needed, you will file a police report. If you have real information on your buyer, this is incriminating evidence that you can use to file a report in attempt to reclaim your property.
-Contact the buyer's financial institution. If you gathered this info from Paypal successfully, contact their bank with all the information you have on the buyer. Provide the bank with the police report file number, and make a full statement to the bank's fraud division against the buyer which will get appended directly to their fraud report. This is your attempt to provide your counter argument, not with Paypal who doesn't give a crap about anyone, but with the bank who is VERY interested in fraud. THEY are your allies here, and your main source of compensation if all falls flat.
How to protect yourself from being hit by a chargeback:
If its a high dollar sale, DONT use Paypal. Zelle is the best choice as its least susceptible to fraud.
(Venmo is owned by paypal. Cash app is a scammer's choice of payment for a reason. Look it up.)
Buyers should have vouches if they wish to use a platform like Paypal. Sure, sellers always are the ones to provide vouches, but understanding that this can happen on this platform, if the buyer insists in Paypal, at minimum make sure they are a trusted individual. If you use Paypal to accept payments, only do so if you are ok losing that money should such a scenario happen to you.
Hope this helps some of you. My eyes were opened tonight to all this, and I want to help educate you guys to this as well. Such knowledge should not have to come at a cost of being burned.
