I'm never present when you say my name, but when all is still, I'm there again.
 
I'm tall when I'm young and short when I'm old.
 
If you haven't gotten me, you don't want me, but once you do, you never want to lose me.
 
I'll give you a hint, it's a compound word that often contradicts the spirit of the first part of its name, and you'd think from the letter of the second part that you can wear it but you can't.
 
No but it has certainly been the cause of some of these.

Brilliant answer! Double meaning. We resist change (of circumstances, etc), but we don't want to lose change (out of our pockets)! Didn't see that one coming at all. Mind expanded!

I was thinking more along the lines that we are usually scared of change, but most of the time change ends up being good, so you don't want to "lose" it by going back.
