Rough and ready work knife

At work I use a Buck Vantage Pro 20cv or Buck 110 LT depending on how much blade I need. Both get in the dirty work and take it well.

This is an interesting question. I have a couple of knives that are designated as utility knives than for EDC: a CRKT Razel and a Snap-On branded Kershaw wharncliffe (can't recall the Kershaw model). The problem with both of these is that I don't like carrying them, so I have to go get them when needed. If I'm going to the garage or elsewhere to get a knife, why do I need a folder? Folders also have the disadvantage of needing to be cleaned. Ever opened a bag of concrete with a folder?

I've been carrying a small Cru-wear fixed blade for EDC lately and it works well. But it's expensive. The Mora chisel blade is a great recommendation. I don't want to carry one, but will use it on tough and dirty tasks.

I'm still looking for the right combo of toughness, edge retention, pocketability, and affordability in an EDC fixed blade.

there in lies the rub :) if you don’t like carrying it... odds are you won’t have it handy at the time you need it, as when I was under the car and the need presented itself, obviously poor planning on my part

I appreciate the suggestions and may pick up one to try

thanks and photos are always welcome

Have I ever opened A bag of concrete with a folder? Nope .... Like an Lay's Tater Chips, one was never enough.

I have opened 2 to 3 bags of concrete per pad/mix with my Buck 110 or Old Timer 7OT or 6OT, when making pads for a central A/C compressor, sand type pool filter, up to 8x10 garden shed*, and etc..
(*The 8x10 garden shed pad took several more than one mix. If memory serves, it took a total of 25 or 30 bags of concrete. I could only mix up to three bags atta time in my big wheelbarrow.)

Good subject, Gary. I have three knives that are my real users. I do carry a folder but of late it gets little use, I'm retired and it's just easier to grab one of these.

Knife on left is by Rob Criswell, on the right by Matt Lamey:

Jeep knife, always nearby, bought this on BF about 13 years ago, it's seen a bit of use not as pretty now:

Nice Win, two guys you don't hear about much these days.

I do miss a good fob ;) and yep, that small Chaparral does not have allowances for one :( otherwise, you know it would be on there!

View attachment 1446812 Another vote for the Rat 1.I am a painter so I have opened paint cans, cut Sheetrock, cut caulk out, and a ton of other dirty stuff. It always does what I need the only ding is the blade steel. Aus 8 needs to be taken care of a little more than I like but for the past few years it’s been my go to work knife. Just grabbed his little brother in d2 to see how that does.

And this is my other do everything knife. Never worry about about it, super useful size and profile, and affordable enough to replace really if needed.

Fixed: Condor Varan (still available online if you look around for about $37 for an 8” blade - great deal)...
Folder: Cold Steel Tuff Lite
