Rough Rider & Related Slipjoints

I think we should limit knives to just traditional materials used before the bronze age.
But ... but ... then we would have to learn the art of knapping, get a fairly large square of leather to protect our leg while sharpening (not inexpensive for them who can't go hunting and tan their critter hides) and only carry fixed blades.
I like my slipjoints and friction folders. For a lot of day to day tasks, they are handier than a sheath knife, and they don't get in the way when not using it, like a sheath knife can. 😁

That is one of the nicest reserve models.
Agreed. It is one that doesn't stray as much as the others from a more classic design. I find many of the other RRR to be a bit weird. There are things I would change but for sub $40, it is real nice.

I have the same knife and enjoy it very much.... One thing I did to make opening it easier through the easy-open notch, was to add a drop of liquid bandage to the blade... It gives you a better grip on the blade when you are pulling it open....

This is an interesting pattern from Rough Ryder ...... RR 2071...... The blades are nice and thin behind the edge...... Has half stops with a smooth action..... No blade rub or other ghastly nonconformances..... A nice knife for the money.......👍

Good idea. The easy-open notch and nail nick placement are the big issues I have with the knife. If you notice in my pic there is a huge finger print where you grab the blade. I got so tired of rubbing that off every time I open the knife that I'm forcing a patina as we speak. Should make it not so noticeable.

Seen some differences in tang stamps on the same model. For example, the RR603 Large stockman.
One was posted the other day in either the Sunday Stockman Picture thread, or the What Traditional Knife are You Totin' Today thread, that has a "Rough Rider" in script tang stamp. Mine has the Horseshoe tang stamp. A couple of my knives in the same series as the RR603, has the Back to Back R tang stamp.
So, I sent an email yesterday (Sunday), asking SMKW if the tang stamp can be used to help determine a date range, if they change tang stamp for any subsequent run of any series.

Here is the response I received today (Monday):

Hello Steve,
Tang stamps are changed when they feel like changing them, there is no specific time range. We do not change stamps for runs.
Thank you,
Kris McQueen

While it may not matter to us, I suppose it might to our great-great and/or later grandkids when they try to date our Rough Rider/Ryder knives they inherit from our heirs 100 plus years from now.

Good luck getting any RR or house brand history help out of SMKW. I was at their store and asked to speak with someone who could answer questions regarding some early RR and Ole Smoky knives. No one there could or wanted to help. They took my contact info with promises to get back to me. Still waiting a year later...

At least they honor the Lifetime Guarantee. 😷👍

$7 postage to return a $15 knife... not worth it to me. They just end up in the trash.
Yep, that’s why I’ve only purchased Reserve knives recently after getting one of the regular ones that was honesty a POS and not worth the expense of returning. 🤷

I've quit buying RR or RRR.Too many with impossible to open backsprings and or hidden nail nicks; not to mention some weird designs.
