My training partner is driving me crazy about checking out a Sayoc Kali school in our area.

Is this system really that much more of an evolutionary step forward in the realm of FMA?

Is it much different from other FMA?

Do you need that $800 training rig system from EDGES2 just to get started?

Thanks in advance.

Stormbringer;

"Is this system really that much more of an evolutionary step forward in the realm of FMA?"

YES and NO. It's in many ways a step BACK to what the FMA once were before they bacame stick arts imitating blade arts.

"Is it much different from other FMA?"

YES. And this is coming from somone that has studied Modern Arnis, LAMECO, Kombatan/Arnis de Mano and Inosanto Blend.

"Do you need that $800 training rig system from EDGES2 just to get started?"

No, not to get started. But you should get ATLEAST 2 good aluminum traing blades, preferably in a shape and size similar to what you plan on carrying. And EDGES2 makes some o' the nicest ones around, Sayoc Kali logo or not

Stormbringer, where are you from and located?
Sayoc Kali is very much at the forefront of blade technologies...

just make sure that the instructor of the school you are interested in is a current certified instructor under Tuhon Chris Sayoc.

check Sayoc.com for the listing of instructors

good luck with your training!!

LOL, well... if you are in the Philadelphia area, i think you are in superb hands there!!

If you are serious about learning Sayoc Kali, the very finest in instruction can be had there!!!

Go for it, you won't be disappointed, and tell Tom i said hello!

respects, Jeff : )

I think Sayoc is going to be the way I will be going in the future. Everything I read is good, when I talk to Tom K. I hear good things about the approach, Donna B. tells me good things.

I read what Tom and "Sun Helmet" write, and it appears to be the real deal. I also trust Donna to give me the scoop on things.

Personally, I am sick of hearing about trying to make weapons that are inherently lethal into non-lethal weapons. Sayoc comes right out and gives you the Game Plan from Day One. I like that. No arrogance, just the truth. That is a good thing.

For some information on Sayoc Kali... go to their website... or you can check out my site, too... where i have links to the articles i have written there...

hope you all have a great new year!!

You don't need a rig to get started.
We have class Tuesdays 7:30
There is a Thursday class at 5:00 run by one of my guys. For people just starting out.
We will be starting class downtown at 16th and Broad St. at a Thai Boxing school in the near future.
If you contact Sean he will get you the info.

My training partner lives only about a half hour from Philly. I believe that most of his FMA background is through Rick Tucci's Princeton Academy.

Unfortunately, I am quite a bit further from Philly. This situation may change very soon, but with your permission I would like to pass this information on to my friend as he is in a better position to traine consistently sooner.

If you are referring to Philly ,there is no such location as 16th & Broad st. Broad st. would be 14th st.-if it existed and both streets (16th,Broad) run parallel to each other.
Although no longer a resident I grew up in Philly.

Stormbringer-
I highly recommend checking into Guro Tom Kier's classes.

I like your screen name. I've actually worked with Mr. Moorcock (creator of Elric/Stormbringer-sword) and have met him; quite an interesting and gracious individual. We spent a good hour just talking about Kiowa Apache culture.

I would highly suggest for you to make wevery effort to train with Guro Tom Kier. I am from Toronto and have seen him move. He has the art, and the experience.
I have gone from Toronto to Philly just to see SAYOC Kalie in action. I suggest for you to
1. check out their website
2. get yourself a membership at Sayoc Kali Silak Intl Group to keep yourself up to date
3. Get started in the classes

You are more fortunate than me. I live 9 hours drive from Toronto Canada. I have to get out of my Igloo and get my sled just to go there...Just kidding.

The mentality of edged weapons with Sayoc Kali is different from What I have seen. The approach, methodologies and system is truly unique, effective, and paid for with experience-both from the Sayoc Family experience, and the current database of experiences being provided by its members. It is an art that is alive.

The truth is that Sayoc kali did improve on Pekiti Tirsia kali's knife fighting techniques (which Tuhon Chris learned in the 70's as a kid). So whatever great stuff you see in Sayoc is mostly (though not entirely) from Pekiti-Tirsia.

I have a problem though with the practicality of wielding all those throw blades (or even just carrying 8 or 9 different knives at all).

Just FYI, it is now TUHON Tom and TUHON Rafael. CONGRATS SIRS!

- Starving for Sayoc in Los Angeles...

Hey Sam, Was it you who sent James Y. to the SF training group? James is an excellent guy and is a natural in the art.

BTW, I think Guro Jeff is coming out to SF in September so maybe he'll also make a stop in LA?

If you are ever in this neck of the woods, please come by and train with us.

All the best,

S.

Sidewinder,

If that is James from the motorcycle website, then I remember recommending his seeking Sayoc instruction. I think he said that he was able to contact you and Airyu on this site. I'm glad (and a little envious) that you guys have established a training group up there and he has been able to train with you. I like to think that excellence has a way of gravitating together. I almost got to meet Guro Jeff a few weeks ago and look forward to meet him in the future. Stay safe and healthy and have fun training!

Respectfully,

Sam

The next time I am able to visit relatives up that way, I will definitely contact you, thanks.
