Schrade 152OT Sharpfinger

In 1992 Schrade offered dealers a free bonus knife when they bought a full hunting knife display. The 502SC "HK92" Scrimshaw bonus knife featured Frank Giorgianni's art of a whitetail deer running left in front of a log, It had a Limited Edition blade etch and there were to be 1,500 pieces serialized.

A while back a friend mentioned he was looking for one and I sent him a link and he bought it. I later looked and didn't have one myself but found one recently. I seriously doubt they made and sent out the advertised limit quantity as both I've seen are salesman's samples.

1992 by the way was Frank's last full year as the Schrade artist before his retirement.

It's taken me awhile, but I've been reading through this thread from the beginning. I'm not done yet (maybe on page 40ish), and don't quiz me on what I've read. I've mostly been idly browsing it during downtime, and looking at the great photos.

Here's my contribution to this thread, and my only Sharpfinger. I love the jigging on this knife.

DS15 2001-2002 Federal Duck Stamp issue! I agree the genuine jigged bone handle covers are quite nice!

This one has a muddled story. Not certain why, but three handle variants have appeared on the resale market. The most common is the beautiful green bone as yours and as seen in factory flyers for the issue. Next there is a jigged bone handle, natural undyed blonde color. And finally, a stag jigged bone burnt but undyed. I suspect this was done aftermarket to sell otherwise finished blanks. With an original MSRP of $150.00 I don't expect the DS15 to have been a good seller. Adjusting for inflation, that is $263.20 in today's dollars.

Regardless of handle material variety, the 2001 DS15 makes a very nice addition to any collection whether the Schrade Federal Duck Stamp anniversary series or a collection of Sharpfinger pattern knives. Getting complete new in the box examples of all three is priceless.

I missed posting a Sharpfinger Monday for Veterans Day. But this issue recently came to mind as several of them have appeared on the bay.

1,500 pieces were ordered, serialized. To be used as a bonus knife for the HK91 hunting knife assortment display. The order was received on May 6, 1991 with delivery date of July 15th - September 30, 1991. The knife itself was termed "502 HKB". My example is serial #SS05 a salesman's sample. The clip art used wasn't very creative but it was a short leadtime on a quickly evolving historic event. From start to finish was only 43 days, January 17 through February 28, 1991.1991 Desert Storm a.jpg

Ignore the oil on the blade in my archive photo. My saleman's sample example is clean but this pic shows the blade etch better.

Here is a special event enhancement set produced in 1995 for U. S. Tobacco, one of four different venue sets. UST95CSO Cope Skoal Outdoors, cased 3pc. Set, 242 pcs. all knives in the sets were birdseye maple Fibron with brass bolsters and pins in a glass top walnut presentation box. There were 242 sets made for this UST sponsored venue.

Hello.

I have a few Schrade USA models but use the Sharpfinger daily. I have it laying of top of kitchen table when it's not on me. I've seen many of the cheaply made China versions with the missing "Old Timer" shield at the handle but not many of the USA made ones. How did they attach the "Old Timer" shields at the handle on the USA made Sharpfingers -vs- the China made ones?

I'm thinking they were both glued on but not sure, however, it seems that whatever the case, the ones made in the USA used a better process or better glue. My concern is that although I clean mine often, I normally avoid getting the handle wet for fear of the shield falling off one day but, the handle gets washed too at least every couple of weeks. Does anyone know how they were attached, and is it safe to wash or get the handle wet periodically? Thanks in advance

I see quite a few Old Timers on Ebay with missing shields, and Bokers are famous for it. I don't know the answer to your request for "how" but I personally would not let a missing shield on a user bother me. Just part of wabi sabi on a HOK.

Factory process was to heat the shield into the inleted Delrin handles. The heated shield lightly melted in. When the shield fell out of my Schrade Walden 165OT circa 1991, I sent it to Ellenville for repair. They glued in the replacement shield and it stayed another twenty years of use until the knife was stolen.

Replacement shields for original Old Timers can still be found. A missing shield, as you know, doesn't affect the function of a Sharpfinger, but it is visible and distracting for frequent carry and use.

Discussing these knives with other collectors, it came to my attention that there was a third issue of the 152OTO. I've not yet found that SMKW catalog to confirm them to have been the customer in 2003-2004, but it seems likely they were. These late order knives have the post July 2001 hollow grind and are only seen in the last box design.

Here are the SMKW catalog pages from the earlier orders showing the plain grind.

Codger can you help me out? Got this today, cant find much information on it? Thanks!

Here is an obscure SC502 Scrimshaw Sharpfinger I saw years ago but missed buying and never found the story behind the art. A bear with "75" on it and text "Unlimited Edition" There are no explanatory blade etches, unserialized and no pile side handle stamp. The art stamp is repeated on the box cover.

I am left to speculate. 1975 would have been Henry Baer's 75th birthday. Albert's 75th would have been 1981. I have it in hand and there were no unseen papers found underneath the box tray as is often the case. Anyone have a clue?

Bringing this one foreword again from my July 2024 post. I've still had no luck finding any information about it. Do any of you recall having seen it in years past or possibly have an example in your collection? I think it was a small production in-house commemorative of some person or event. But that is still an unsubstantiated guess. Help me out here ladies and gents!
