Recently located my dad's old Schrade Walden #148 knife and had it sharpened and cleaned-up. Info I've found (on this site) says it could be from '53, maybe slightly newer. (maybe early '60s) - Not sure WHERE my dad got that sheath ... lol

"If you read carefully, you will note that the phenolic resin wood handles date from the early sixties, not mid 1950's." ..... ahhh, good to know...
I was going by this text:

Soooo, I'm kinda confused..... lol...help me! So they made the 148 for quite a few years.... I'm still reading and trying to figure out the differences....

Are Stratawood and Wondawood two different woods? Any photos of the two?

Thanks!

"Baer first began using this new resin impregnated wood material circa 1948 and called it "Propwood", then "Strata-wood", and in the mid fifties "Wonda-wood"." ..... Im so confused..... lol

Soooo, this is where I'm confused Codger....... "The #148 pattern "Hunter's Mate" I find first listed in 1953. It sold for $4.50 in 1955. It was 9 1/4" overall with a saber ground carbon steel 5" blade, aluminum alloy guard, Stratawood handle with black and white spacers on each end, and plain (now called birds head) pommel. It came with a genuine leather flat sewn and riveted sheath with embossed floral tooling design." ..... and if it's "Same material under different proprietary names" ....(Stratawood & Wondawood) ...how does one know if it's a #148 or a #148WW?? Thanks!

Oh those are cool...thanks! Will check them out.

This is what I come up with:

I'm assuming the #148MM was NOT stamped on the knife? Just the #148?
And if Stratawood & Wondawood are "Same material under different proprietary names" .... I'm thinking the only way to pinpoint the year better, is to have the original sheath, which I don't have..... :(

Best is to have the box, papers and sales receipt. Other than that... No, handle nomenclature usually only appeared in catalogs, not on the blades since the same blades were used for almost all handle configurations.

Ooooo yeah, the box would be nice! I'm afraid it's long gone..... daggum it...... lol

And thanks again for the info!

Does the Stratawood and Wondawood both fit into the "phenolic resin wood" category?

Yes. My prior statement was incorrect other than the name changes. And no, I do not know what resin was used or who produced them. I doubt it was done inhouse.
