SEARS KNIFE WORLD

Do those spiral punches have a sharp side.
Hi Oldy

Here is the Face side of a Spiral Punch, as you can see the Face is concave leaving the edges- as edges.

I haven't found a Spiral Punch with Super sharp edges, but without a doubt they are indeed an edge that has a bit of " keenness" to it - and if you could imagine having a thin edge like that twisting through - it does the job very well. Have a look just how fine the concave face goes up to that very fine edge. Also look at the "point" of the Spiral punch how it has a angled ( sharpened ) face - that gives it a keen sharp start to your point of entry.

Have a listen to Charlie talking on the CATCH BIT SHOW to Neal and Mike, now nobody knows more than Charlie about Punches- imagine the talks / discussions Charlie has had over the years on this subject- even sitting down with Manufacturers discussing these exact points ( pardon the pun).
Charlie stated that the Punch should have a sharp edge, I am sure that there are variances between manufacturers of their Punches, but you can guarantee that they all have a keen edge, I have been a victim of Punches in the past and don't want to experience that again.

Thanks for that,it now makes sense.

Here is a Nice old Knife that probably not so many of consider old, but when you think that this Knife, the 9587 being from 1938 that's 85 years old.

If this Knife had Stag Handles on it- we would be chasing this one, but even though it has the exact same top-of-the-line Blades and Punch from Camillus sporting the "HIGH CARBON STEEL USA" Tang stamp- but it sports the Blue collar outfit, being the "Buckhorn" Handle Material. Often has cracked by now and you see this Knife does have those, the lighting makes this crack look terrible- normal daylight- it's very much harder to see, I think its an attractive Knife, In my opinion that Buckhorn looks pretty darned good.
Of course that Camillus Spiral Punch sets things off every time :)

Another Composite Knife- cam out a few years later, the numbered Knife 9470 was a Bone handled Knife in 1948, in 1939 the 9470 was a two bladed Knife. this one has superb Peach-Seed Composite covers- I know... we go past the composites so quickly- I used to, but I stopped once I had a few of these right in front of me and read where they came from etc - I think this too, for a composite, is really quite attractive. In nice condition!

One more Composite for tonight from Sears
This is such a nice Knife to handle, Sears "Soft Grip" Handled Stockman, but as I talked about earlier- Sears Marketed their Knives every different angle you could imagine, this Stockman is Etched" CRAFTSMAN GUNSTOCK- with very fine etching under the Gunstock " Stainless Steel".
This Knife seems to be unused, and what makes this Knife even more special to me is that our good friend Mr. Paul Hilborn gifted me this Knife 😀 - Paul... this is a real beauty of a Knife my friend, your a Champion matey- Thank you so very much for this pristine example of a nice Knife!!!

While on the Stockman theme, This smaller Knife caught my eye, I picked it up- and when it arrived I had a good look at this Knife- Man I really like this wee Knife, one upward swept Bolster and the other downward swept going with the flow of the serpentine frame, I think the slight offset to the rounding to compliment the direction really makes a great subtle addition.
Real nice Jigged Bone, This Mint unused Ulster made Knife that only has "Forged Steel" gets the Thumbs up from me

Sweet little knife, Duncan!! Beautiful!!!!

Thanks Steve and Charlie- Its certainly not the biggest, 🤣 I couldn't figure out why the knife just looked so right- and then when you look at the Bolsters they are not symmetrical one side of the bolster has a longer sweep, I am not sure if I have seen a lot of this or I have been unaware of that fact it is quite common.

What a 😎 knife Duncan 👍🤠

A while ago, I posted an ULERY set, Napanoch made- the Knife that has the one Spear Blade with a shockingly lovely Swage work and on the opposite end of the Equal-Ender you have the slot-in compartment that accommodates the different selection of tools.
This Ulery set had 4 tools to pick from, each nicely Tang Stamped, posted before, shown again ( below) for reference.

This next set is slightly larger, it has the 6 tools to choose from and is stamped WILBERT, this Knife too has nice Swage work- but not quite as wide as the Ulery, the knife seems to have been used as the Knife and not so much of the Tooling optioned Tool, as the Blade shows use- yet still full bladed, but the Tools and Leather pouch don't seem to have had too much use at all - although some.

I apologise about the Bombardment of Knives- and a lot of them the very middle class more economic section from Sears, I need the room off my desk for new adventures and cant have these sitting here anymore 🤣

There was SO MUCH variety of knives within the 4 walls of Sears, knives that can be described in similarity of the Car World as "SLEEPERS".
This meant a fairly plain car- not so much of a big dollar paint job or flashy exterior - but under the Hood is packed with a massive hunk of Horsepower that would blow the doors off an unsuspecting Muscle Car driver, so too in the Sears World these Composite covered Knives had all the good stuff packed within the Liners, you bought the cheaper Knife- but you got the good Steel....

This Knife I admire, why? because it's just got that tough look about it, an Equal Ender with a nice Clip-Point Blade, Silver Nickle Bolsters, nice Swage, Long Pull, nice Shield, a good sized - no nonsense Pen blade, Tang stamping in stylized Script font STA-SHARP ( OVER ) USA
Very faint etching "STA-SHARP" 9472 HEAVY DUTY.

I would not enter it into the show and shine, but I couldn't go past this Knife either- Boy if the Etch was more prominent - it would really lift this knife's appeal to the greater population. To me- it's as though that etch is like brand new when I look at this knife, perhaps this may be the sign I need a Holiday 😂

ok, ok, last plain Jane for a while - I promise!
Slightly later model Sears- The reason why I picked this up was simply because "for the record".

Full bladed, Lock-back Craftsman 95231, The usual Rosewood Handle material - which is actually very nice, it is just that we see so much of it- we tend to switch off and really look at the nice piece of Wood on these Knives, Love it when Brass Patina's off- looks 10 times better than shiny Brass, imo. I think Patina'd Brass actually looks more quality and bling bling Brass looks cheap - tastes vary don't they.

Plain and simple, here it is

thank you for putting up with me, now I can move these off my Desk :)👍

Two absolute Beauties there my friend! Those 5 bladers are something else aren't they! like you say though, that 4 blade is a beaut!

Sears knife group, hoping you can tell me your thoughts on who made this Wilbert

Hello Sears cutlery historians,

Any thoughts on the maker of this Wilbert stockman?
