A friend of mine is trying to find out what is the best way to sharpen recurve knives. The knife in question is the new Spyderco Spyker. I know the 204 Sharpmaker that Spyderco also puts out is capable of doing it just fine but I was wanting to know if you guys may have any other tips I am not aware of.

you can buy a round hard arkansas stick from norton (msc) for not much. don't try using flat on concave curves.

freehand is easy, if you like doing it.
A tapered fine india gouge stone and a hard round stick (they're tiny, buy a couple) might run you 25$ or so total.

or a silicon carbide wheel on a dremel, if you have good nerves and a bad nick in the blade.. not sure i'd try it..

The SharpMaker edges of the triangles are perfect for recurves. Search the archives, there was once a training section that had a wonderful tutorial on sharpening a BM 710 recurve. That same technique will work on a Spyker.
