Should I buy a knife just because of magna cut

Good morning gentlemen, I know at one time or another every one of us is probably had a few Kershaw leeks. I gave one to my son-in-law, I gave one to my brother, but now I see they have a leek in magna cut. I'm pretty sure it was around $200. Would you spend that kind of money on that knife just to get magna cut? Just curious as to what you think, thank you in advance.

They were like $135 at Knifecenter last I checked. And yep, still available.

Personally, I’m not a huge Leek fan, so no.
But, if there was a knife I wanted and I could choose a Magnacut upgrade, I’d probably do it—for example the Hogue Deka.

So I guess it should boil down first and foremost to how badly you want another Leek.

I’ve never had a Leek and won’t buy one regardless of steel, they simply aren’t knives I find appealing.

With knives I do find appealing, no, I also wouldn’t buy one just because it has magnacut. I have several CRK knives containing a mix of S30, S35, and S45 steels and see no reason to buy another Sebenza just to have a magnacut blade. (I know I can send it in to have a MC blade fitted but I don’t need it).

If it is a knife that sees use, and you haven't tried the steel, having one just to see how you like it isn't a bad idea.
Maybe in your use case, you see no benefit over what you already have. Or maybe you notice a significant performance increase. Everybody uses their knives a bit differently, and there's no one perfect steel for everybody.

If you can afford it and like the knife anyway, trying MC out could be worth a shot.

I spent $300+ on Tactile.

Great little knife!

The HRC was 60-62, allegedly.

A friend of mine liked it and asked if she could have. She now owns it.

No complaints.

No, I don't think I would. I am much more interested in historical form and function of knives than steel; and where I am interested in steel, it is usually to get something older (in this case Carbon V) as when I decided I wanted the Cold Steel SRK for its very practical lines but not in any of the later stainless incarnations.

I do need to qualify my answer, though. I have a Buck 110 with an aluminum frame and red micarta scales and drop point blade that scratched the "lightweight and durable and beautiful and traditional" itch I was having at the time. I guess that's no different than buying a knife for having a Magnacut blade. Knives are more than just blades, so I bought mine for the materials I wanted. But they are also blades, so you might as well buy one for the materials you want. It turns out my 110 is one of my favorites and I use it all the time; it makes me very happy. The Magnacut Leek will probably do the same for you, especially if you go back to that model so frequently after giving them to friends and family.

Edit: I REALLY wish that 110 had a 5160 steel blade!

I wouldn't. Mostly just because I've never been a big fan of the design of the Leek. I've owned one. Pretty sure I traded it off years ago. I don't miss it. Then again, if you like it, have a blast man. I hope you enjoy.

From another angle, from the research I've done, MagnaCut looks like some sweet steel. I'd like to try some myself. For my preference, I'd rather it be in a Cold Steel large Voyager or an Esee 4, or... To each his own.
