Should I buy a knife just because of magna cut

There's a lot more to a knife than just the steel type .

I've got to love the whole package ! ☺️
I like it but I've had quite a few of them. I'm not really crazy about it.They're okay but nothing to write home about. I'm just looking for a cheap way to test some magna cut. The best steel I have on hand out of all of my knives so far would be 20 CV. Although aus 10A will give it a run for it's money.

If you like Leeks that are reasonably priced, take a look at the Digital Brown Aluminum scales with Blackwash Blade.

Magnacut will give better performance, BUT you will only see the difference if (a) it is heat treated to 62-64 HRC and (b) you actually use the knife hard enough for the better performance to be obvious.

For sharpening the Worksharp guided system works well for cheap.

A great steel is probably not going to make you feel all that differently about a design you're lukewarm on..
He’s got a good point about that. It is one of the lowest priced knives in MC as far as I know, and Kershaw/ZT’s USA stuff is always a safe bet as far as quality control, heat treat, etc.
But in normal use you probably wouldn’t notice a huge difference between this steel and other well balanced stainless steels with good edge retention. That’s the only reason I haven’t bought one yet, I have one in CPM-154….
Now if I was able to get Magnacut on my last couple knife purchases for a few bucks more, that would be another story…

I would sugest the Hogue Deka if you want to try Magnacut at a decent price. It's cheaper than the Leek, Axis style lock, and is supposedly heat treated to ~63rc

I picked up my first Pro-Tech knives recently. I searched and waited until I could get them in Magnacut. I don't think I'd buy the same knife with just a Magnacut upgrade, or buy a knife just for the Magnacut.

Good morning gentlemen, I know at one time or another every one of us is probably had a few Kershaw leeks. I gave one to my son-in-law, I gave one to my brother, but now I see they have a leek in magna cut. I'm pretty sure it was around $200. Would you spend that kind of money on that knife just to get magna cut? Just curious as to what you think, thank you in advance.
There are a llot of pages here on MagnaCut. Do a search. Holds an edge and is easy to sharpen. Comments above about the heat treat are spot on. For my money I’d look for a 4 1/2”-5 1/2” field knife in that steel. The Leek is too small to put to hard use.

Carothers is working on one. Best heat treat in the business. Here are a couple hundred more. Folders and fixed blades.

Here’s one that’s a bit Leek like.

I bought a hogue Deka in magnacut just to tey it, around $135 for the clip point version. Also ended up getting the camo deka with cpm20cv and it sees more pocket time, both sit next to each other.

Magnacut seems to be a phenomenal steel for daily use with low maintenance. In fact I am looking forward to gifting some knives in it to others that should hold an edge well, be tough enough for most tasks and have no worries on corrosion. But, I have a feeling there's something even better in Dr Thomas' lab. In a recent interview he stated he had to get buy in from the steel company's metallurgist to get the research melt for MagnaCut, but he proved he knew what he was talking about and the melt backed up his predictions, with one exception. He got the wear resistance and toughness he was shooting for, but was actually surprised at the level of the corrosion resistance he ended up with. So, what are the odds he looks into a MagnaCut 2.0 and tweaks things even more for either edge retention, toughness or a little more of each and get corrosion resistance back to the middle of the pack so to speak?
