Silky Big Boy 2000 XL

Hey lads,
Any of you blokes had a bash at sharpening these bad boys?
Cheers

I haven't, but the replacement blades aren't cheap, so it's a good question. The way that the Silky blades are ground would require sharpening the face of the tooth. No setting of the teeth would be required. I think I could improve a dull blade....I'm not sure I could get it to cut like a new blade.

There is a file made for sharpening silkys. Looked into a while ago but didn't buy one

Just did a search for that and found this:

"When sharpening a blade it requires a lot of patience, but it is doable! Silky Japan recommends that you only file the top edge for the first 2 times that you sharpen a blade. Do not attempt the side angles as this will dramatically alter the way it cuts."

Looks like a guy should leave the faces alone contrary to what I said earlier. I've filed a lot of set-tooth style handsaws and the T-handled outdoorsman saws on an Acme handsaw filer, but I'm going to guess that the Silkys are produced by grinding rather than filing and thus that super nice/sharp finish that might be hard to reproduce with a file. If a guy were just to sharpen that tops like they suggest, just a light touch at the correct angle against a belt sander might work fine.

Cheers for the response mate. Sorry about my late reply here. I went off travelling and totally forgot to check this thread while I was away!
Thanks to Bore as well.
It looks interesting. I don't own a silky saw yet but it's on my to do list. I was recently reading up about saw sharpening but I've never done it on stuff this small before or with a pull-cut blade.

I'm an arborist, i carry a silky zubat 330 (special arborist edition w/ 5.5 TPI) strapped to my leg while climbing.

I have never met another climber who has sharpened their saw even once, just replace the blade and be done with it...

Not saying attempting is a bad thing but when you're doing this for production it's just not worth it.
