Smith & Wesson Extreme Ops Tanto Folding Knife

All the S&W knives I have seen and held were crap. They make a nice gun but only put their name on junk knives.

The Smith and Wesson Knives are made by Taylor Brands, who IIRCC pays S&W to use their name.

I actually just picked up this Model at Bass Pro, and for a total of $27, it had a solid lock up out of the package (rock solid), came relatively sharp, and a PERFECTLY centered blade. I picked it up on a whim and had a gift card. Bass Pro likes to sell above MSRP... and had nothing I wanted, but always wanted one before I really got into knives. I am impressed and it's actually kicked the PM2 out of my pocket for now...

I have a S&W "Extreme Ops" karambit that I play around with quite a bit and sometimes carry. I mainly got it cause I'm a sucker for karambits, Emerson is out of my price range, and my work would sorta frown on carrying a Cold Steel Steel Tiger or my Kris Cutlery Korambit 1 on my hip. Even after having it for around a year and playing around with it quite a bit, it has no blade play, blade coating hasn't come off, and has no issues. It doesn't hold an edge long, but that's the only issue I have with it.

I also have that one bernard_s3 listed, though mine's in desert tan instead of black. Fun knife(and the assisted opening is incredibly fast), though not something I'd really carry regularly.

They've probably improved a bit. I have one labeled CK6A (think that's the model and it looks a lot like the one in the pic matador posted but mine is old and there have been some changes. Mine says first production run though that could be a bunch of nonsense, it looks they have seen some improvements if some people like them because the one I have is junk. Pivot comes loose, screws fall out, lock up is is fairly solid but not strong and there is blade play in more amounts than I think is acceptable.

That's the knife

what do you want for $15.00?? they come with a life time warrenty so if the screws fall out you just send it back in and you get a new one.

exactly. I was just curious if this knife was capable of being an EDC that wouldn't get abusive use very often.

Group photo.

Top is a steel frame lock, chisel grind. Detent blade retention when closed is iffy.

Middle is the one I mentioned that I use for acid dipping, media blasting etc...

Bottom is that flipper. Notice the wear on the steel handles.

a long time ago I was selling at the flemarket. the hrt just came out so I bought 12 of every style that they came in. I like them so I went back and ask them if I bought 2,000 of the one that I like what would my price be?? boy did they make me a deal bikers week I put them out for $15.00 each and another knife dealer complained about my prices so I went down to $10.00 each. boy did I move some knives that week. I have had nobody complained about them falling apart. they did alot of complaing when I ran out.

Strange thing how cheap knives can be pretty good and even $100-250 folders have problems often enough - soft screws, crap lock-up, grinds well off, etc.

A funny thing about the knife I mentioned in my first post... I bought that HRT about 8 years ago. Never seen another one on the street. When I came in to work tonight and friend pulled out his brand new knife and sure enough it's the exact same one. It doesn't flip anywhere near as well as mine, but I'm sure that's the because it's new. Mine has been flipped exactly 100 billion times. They use nylon bushings, but they aren't bad. Mine has no play anyway.

Edit- this is the HRT that I'm talking about. If you see this flipper cheap you might like it.

The way I heard the story, Darrell Ralph saw that S&W was ripping off his designs. They ended up paying him to design the HRT line for them.

Oh really? Actually I'm not that surprised. A lot of their (sic) designs look... familiar...

Darrell collaborates with the weirdest companies. I wouldn't say he slums it, but mtech and s&w? Oh well, whatever pays the bills. I can't blame him. Hell, Hibben probably has serious talent too.

I think different brands of knives are like car brands. There are cheap entry models and more expensive models. I've had a S&W Extreme Ops CK46BT folding knife with a tanto blade designed by Morgan A. Taylor (whoever he is) for about 10 or 12 years. I've used it more or less continually in that time and it's just as tight and sound as when I bought it. The thick, razor-sharp blade is 440 titanium with a hefty, all steel handle that feels solid in my hand. I forgot where I got it or what I paid but, however much it was, I certainly got my money's worth from it and it's still going strong. Only my Marine K-Bar is better. Go figure.

Maybe S&W has changed the quality of their knives but, I disagree with you. See my comments at the end of these posts. Jarhead Dug.

1) You are commenting on a thread that went dead 6 years ago.
2) I am glad you enjoy your S&W Extreme Ops CK46BT folding knife with a tanto blade
3) One of the subtleties and joys of this whole knife thing is growing to know the differences between cheap and inexpensive, and between expensive and quality.
4) 440 titanium? Is that just 440 mystery steel with some sort of coating?
