So (too) many knives?

Lots of good answers already. They are a distraction, they give us pleasure. I don't feel much guilt about buying knives anymore although after a period of rapid accumulation I typically begin to experience an equally powerful compulsion to sell down the hoard. It's a cycle that I enjoy.

That's an Areaware fish knife/bottle opener. It is not high quality (made in China, steel is 3Cr13). My sister bought it for me as a gag.
Ahh ok lol.. it seemed a little out of place in a collection like that.

And I wondered if maybe I am going a bit overboard

I don't think you are. I don't have nearly as many knives as many people here but I have a lot more than that.

We all have more than we need, but then we all have more shoes/socks/shirts/dishes/pots/house/car/... than we need. So it is up to each individual person to decide what is reasonable for them to have. Nobody esle can decide for you. It isn't based on need, it isn't even based on how many you use. You can collect knives with no intention of ever using them, and I have such a collection of custom hunting knives. I think some knives are made to be used and it is great if we use them, but other knives are nice enough that a lot of people just look at them and don't use them. If you want to own 1000 knives that you don't use, then that is up to you. For many people it is enough to be able to look at them, or even know that they have them.

I have a batch of knives that I use weekdays, my EDC rotation. I have another batch of knives that I pick from to use on weekends when I'm working on the house or yard or whatever. I have a few knives that I use for special occasions such as when wearing a suit. I have a batch of misc. knives that I don't actually use for anything. And I have a batch of knives that are my collection, and I just look at them occasionally.

So then what's the blue spyderco next to the orange spyderco (endura?) (stretch?)

The proper number of knives (bicycles, fishing gear, firearms, etc.) is "N+1"
"N" being the number you currently have.

Please note: "N+1" does not apply to wives/ husbands/girlfriends/boyfriends, as the case may be.

They make us feel good. They distract us from the reality that we will never stand on Mars or play leapfrog with Kate Upton. For us, knives are anesthesia for the soul. They make us forget - for a moment - about our less than perfect lives, our $25K jobs at Home Depot and our Kia Sephia payments. It is only when we fail to recognize this anethesia/soul relationship that we get in trouble. So embrace the burn. Knives make us happy, and Happyville is not a bad place to live.

Happyville is a place I like to live. On the picture, I have mixed emotions about such photos. It's cool for knife people, but honestly I would forget what certain knives are when they are in a big pile like that.

Just like any drug! You don't "need" it, but oh man you want it!! I use my knives quite a bit, but suprisingly, my knives that get to most use are not my folders or my EDCs, it is my machetes that get the most use. Probably close to 4-6 hours of continuous use a week, on average. As for my folders, I have more than enough to last my lifetime and my kids lives, and they don't get half as much use as my machetes, and nowhere near as hard use that would cause them to wear out, break down, etc.

Sure, it can become an addiction, but it's a hobby and there is some pleasure than can be obtained from the next acquisition.

Once one get's past a SAK, a multi-tool, a SD/tactical folder, a "user" folder and a couple of fixed blades (bush craft and chopper/lopper/wood processor) "need" becomes less of a driver in the analysis.

It's a hobby and, like all hobbies, it's purpose is to pass time (many money) pleasurably. Some go to customs for their fix, others exploit to the maximum a particular brand, maker or style - others each and every iteration of a specific model. We all do what we do in different ways. Me? I've got utilitarian users that will last me and my progeny lifetimes ... Beckers, Cold Steel Voyagers and the like; yet, notwithstanding their durability I have back-ups and, for my favorites or discontinued models, back-ups for the back-ups! Other than my plethora of Beckers, Emersons and gaggle of voyagers, my time in the Keys, Bahamas or up/down the Atlantic coast in and around salt I've grown passionate about Syderco's H1 "Salt Series" line-up and have multiples of them as well and, yes, a few back-ups - though, truth be told, before I got into H1, most stainless steels have served me very well over the years with simple care.

I enjoy owning my Sebenzas, One-Piece Range CRK knives, Busses - they're all great but I'm hardly ever out of the house without an Emerson (have way too many of them too), but my users and beaters is where my collection has wandered and those darned Beckers seem to rub together in storage and multiply.

So, if a SAK, a multi-tool, a SD/tactical folder, a "user" folder and a couple of fixed blades would satisfy my (and most's) "needs" ... what keeps us going?

I got to feeling a little guilty seeing someone's "purge" thread last week, so I gave away a few knives to my Brother and 2 of his Boy Scout sons. His wife got one, as well.

Okay, Now that I purged 4 out of my 100+ collection, I can buy some more. :p

Seriously, though, I plan to give away a good knife on my 5000 post, which should be soon.

My daughter (an only child) used to ask me what my favorite ___ was. I would tell her that I had to have a favorite wife and a favorite daughter, everything else I could have multiple favorites, or not even pick favorites.

Bigbluefish, I think you need to add 1 or 2 balisongs to your collection. You can flip those for fun and actually use them quite a bit :D

Hehe I couldn't agree more.
