SOG Multi - Tools ?

Okay this is just my personal opinion and 17 years of using SOG and trying other multi tools like the leatherman SURGE which is supposed to be top of the line. And my opinion is the SOG is for the working man who actually uses his tools hard and dirty. The rest are for the tinkerers who might be occasional light users. I am sure there are exceptions that can be shown here but that is just my personal opinion having tried them.

Big plus is if you want a new tool to add you order it and install in yourself in a few minutes and you are done. Which means you can custom make your own set of tools to your liking. I broke my pliers tips one time in 17 years called them up and they sent me new ones with no charge. BAM done and installed in a few minutes. I would wear down a tool in my leatherman and they would not send me a replacement. Sent it out and did not see it again for 6 weeks. I am a working man I need my tool back much sooner then that. Three times sent out in one year and I finally gave it away. No thanks never again.

Now lets go down the line of tools provided. People say they seem to simple. I say simple is good and very effective at doing the job that needs to be done.

Again they are simple scissors but work flawlessly on everything.

p1161804792-4.jpg

This is there thickest flat screwdriver. I put it on a grinder made it a little shorter and you got a great prybar for many uses.

p1161807665-4.jpg

We all know what this is and does the job well just like the other multitools.

p1161810929-5.jpg

Now this once was a Phillips screwdriver head. I needed a fine head for those tiny little flat head screws like the ones that hold towel bars in place that are so tiny. Sog makes there phillips screw drivers more out of some kind of harder tool steel so this was a perfect candidate to grind down and custom make my own tool. And it has worked perfectly. The ones that come with Leatherman the very first time I use it the head bends and that just pisses you off. And as you can see it has been used for other things as well and still has not broken from heavy abuse.

p1161811407-4.jpg

Again very simple knife but does the job. Couple of passes with the knife sharpener once a week and good to go.

p1161818473-5.jpg

It is amazing how much I use this file and it makes a great flat head screwdriver also.

p1161821197-5.jpg

Another awl I put on the other side because I use it so much.

p1161821892-5.jpg

The flat head screw driver I did not grind down and use for it's intended purpose.

p1161822347-5.jpg

Phillips head screw driver has great steel and yet to show any signs of wear.

p1161822892-5.jpg

Here is a flat head I ground down into a very functional chisel and scraper I use all the time. Try to do this kind of custom with a leatherman and it gets expensive.

p1161823391-5.jpg

And the amazing pliers. No other comes close in the multi tool world for fantastic grip and opens a tad bit wider then the rest. I open water meters for homes all the time with it. It is the one time I snapped the head off.

p1161858063-5.jpg

Fantastic saw I use on wood, plastics and aluminum for making screen frames sometimes. Also good for getting out old spline stuck in the framing.

I think I might have had to call in to place my order, I would send them an email with what you are looking for as far as parts, and which tool they are for (there are a few versions, so a pic of the tool might help) and hopefully they can sort you out. sorry about that, it was a while ago.

It is mentioned on that page under "WHAT ABOUT MY PLIER HEAD?", thank you.

I may call them about putting together the tool I want; a power assist with scissors, awl, and bit driver. I carry multiple guns so I don't have room for multiple knives/multi tools. V cutter will be the first thing to go.

Unless it has changed in the last year scissors I believe will not go on the power assist. Otherwise I would have bought one by now.

This guy has a handful of West Marine performance sailing tools made by SOG left if you contact him directly. Very nice guy though he's not giving them away. I bought one recently, I'm a sucker for anything with a marlinspike. 2 days after my purchase it's in my mailbox from Virginia to Texas, hard to complain about that.

I love this thing. Fit, finish, build quality is 2nd to none. As I've been playing with it the only multitool I can think of in its class in terms of build quality is the Swisstool which I also have and cherish.

So, are all SOGs built and finished this well?

Regarding the hole in the file, I believe that is a shackle opener and that's why there is no grit inside for, say, sharpening fishhooks. The packaging says "file/shackle key" At first I thought the shackle key was the end of the hex wrench tool but the packaging also lists "3 wrenches (#8, #10, 1/4")". I'm not sure what use the crimper has on a sailing/sailor's tool; but I'm no sailor or sailing buff.

I wonder if SOG would put the power assist feature back in?

Has anybody replaced the plastic spacer on a West Marine (or a power assist or a blacktip) with scissors or an awl or something else? I see a possible issue with the one hand opening stud on the sheepsfoot blade. It might be in the way of a potential new adjacent tool.

More pictures showing the plastic spacer:

I have the s44 and the bigger one. LOVE them both!! The bigger one i use on my trapline, takes a beatin and still tickin!

what is this hex wrench tool that you speak of? where do you find it?

also, with regard to the hex bit set - what a hunk of junk. Are there any standard mods that can be done to regular run-of-the-mill adapter that will allow it to sit more snugly on the driver?

I just received a PowerAssist I ordered from SOG warranty department customized with components exactly the way I wanted it, with scissors, awl, bit driver, and file.

I started with the sales department and was first told they don't swap out tools anymore. So I started asking about buying the parts individually and the extra shim and washer pack and doing it myself as I had heard of online. The sales guy knew nothing about the the extra shim and washer pack, perhaps it was discontinued before his time. I asked if it wouldn't make more sense to have their warranty department do it, make sure it's all right, than to have them ship to me, me bugger it up, and ship it back to warranty and they fix it and ship it back to me.

He put me on hold, came back, and said it turns out they will sell it through warranty just the way I want.

At this point they got me just exactly what I want. Mind you, warranty isn't the best at communication about it. I was told I'd get an email which never happened. I called back and the best I got was an order number over the phone. So what? These warranty guys are blue collar guys fixing and assembling tools. I have in my hands the very tool I wanted inside of 2 weeks, so I couldn't be happier.

Try that out with Victorinox and see what you get.

SOG's price for a base PowerAssist is much higher than what you could buy one from Amazon for. But you then still have to buy the add on parts. SOG gives you credit for the unused parts you are swapping out for so it all pretty much evens out (unless you'd rather tinker yourslef and value those extra parts).

I decided to remove the inside tool cover for faster access.

Here you can see no washers were used. The scissors and bit driver each took up 2 of the 6 available slots which I used for the file and awl.

17710210835_eb5f9c259c_b.jpg

Drivers are still available with the bit kit.

17515176100_3517c70f12_b.jpg

The PowerAssist and bit kit fit just fine in a nylon Leatherman Surge sheath which I like because it affords horizontal belt carry.

Thats perfect, I would just put a philips where you have the socket adapter. Now I gotta get one.

Gerber bit kits are made to fit their phillips. If that bit kit adapter would fit the SOG phillips that would be a good way to go.
Of course you have more than one phillips in either bit kit but having capability without the bit kit is a plus.

I bought a 2nd Blacktip for my brother who is an avid saltwater kayak fisherman.

I ordered a 2nd PowerAssist this time in Black oxide.

I unfortunately have a different story when it comes to SOG multitools. I had a SOG PowerLock i messed around with the "compound leverage" and cut pennies and all kinds of things like the demo videos and that was incredible. However, the first time I actually needed to use the pliers for something (tightening a battery terminal) one side of the actual pliers snapped off and broke the second I started adding pressure. I'm sure this was some sort of factory defect but it kinda turned me off to their multitools.
All this happened within a matter of 2 weeks of purchasing the tool.

I need professional help! ;) I ordered a third Blacktip for a backup in case I loose one. The huge size of the body and pliers really appeals to me.

When they are no longer available it will instantly be worth 3 times what you paid for it.

I checked and the gerber MP600 bit kit Phillips adapter does not fit the SOG Phillips just FYI.

Did you not contact their warranty department? They've been extremely helpful in my experience.

does the Gerber adapter not fit as in it's loose, or the driver is too big? If it's loose, how does it compare to the SOG adapter/driver?

It's loose as in spins around uselessly. I don't understand the second question. The SOG adapter / driver works fine.
