Okay, I really do like to chat with those who like my works and I am thinking about making this thread a "stickie". I am really high strung, driven and probably more than a bit obsessive/compulsive, at least in my work.

So, today a rolled the dice and bought a big $800. rock based on nothing more than a few chips on it that show black and white lines all mixed and looking crazy. I haven't seen anything like it before and I was told it is Black Sky Owyhee but nothing like any I have seen before.

So, I am kind of freaking about buying this stone tonight and if it was not so late I would be clamping it into my 24 inch saw to see what is inside. It may be something really out there wild - or a $800. yard rock in a few days.

Now I know a lot of you are stopping in an reading and I actually drop in here every morning and usually a few times in the evening to see if anyone is here. So, how about asking me some questions in this new thread or just grouse about life or things that are making you happy or driving you nuts.

Heck that $800. was a big chunck of my Madras show funding so I sure hope it turns out to be crazy wild inside, porcelain like jasper and fracture free. Heck is that asking too much of an $800, rock?

Okay, all of you lurkers - this is the place to start saying "hi" laughing at my stressing over a big rock or anything else you want. It does not need to be about rocks, my knives or my slightly peculiar mind..... :p

I would really like to see this forum become more active as I kind of feel I am just "promoting" when I wanted it to be more about what you are thinking or doing.

$800. big rock.

Okay, so I think I have a winner here. I do believe it is a very rare variation of the Black Sky Owyhee as in the area not banded it does have the correct "black sky" and the matrix rock is the same as on the other pieces that were in the collection of Black Sky Owyhee. The stone is from an Estate inherited by one of my long time stone dealers who has dozens of years experience with stone from Idaho, Oregon and Nevada. I may have a lot more going on with this estate as I have been "invited" to help move the best 3000 pounds of the collection from Nevada to the dealers home in Federal Way this fall once it is cool enough to work 3 days outside in the desert where it is stored.

Let me know what you think of this weird stone.

"Hi.":)

Winner or not ... I like what I see there. A little subdued compared to what I often see on stone-handled knives, but very interesting -- for someone who wants class with just enough flash. The striated appearance creates complexity; draws the eye in.

Heck, I'd buy a knife with those grips!

Very nice material! I like that black/white look it has. Looks like a winner to me!

I recently bought some black/white striped jasper with splotches of blood red, it looks incredible! I wanted it all and bought every slab I could afford.

That red looks like a local jasper we have, Sanchez Jasper... excellent material.

I need to get collecting some more, I found some rainbow flint that I have been on the trail of for years. There are 10,000 pound pieces of petrified wood all over that site, I have never seen anything like it.

Here's some Jasper I bought a few years back.

This rough isn't even close to as nice as what you have!

Sanchez Jasper - the stripes are uncommon

Daniel,

I really like the Sanchez Jasper, especially in the direction you cut it. It is a pretty neat pattern and the colors are vivid too. WOW....

That is the only time I have seen that pattern in that Jasper too, it is usually just red and orange mixed together. I think it is from the Moab area, I bought that piece. We have some nice bright red jasper I find locally but the pieces are cab size.

That Owyhee is a beautiful looking stone. I'm looking forward to seeing it on some knives.
