I was excited, as always, to see what was coming out soon with Spyderco and found something that was a little shocking. The Spyderco Stovepipe that’s in the Reveal 9 line up is listed at $420 at all the dealer sites, that’s over $450 with taxes. Let me first say, I’m a HUGE Spyderco fan, user and collector so this is not a “crap on Spyderco” post. I appreciate almost everything they produce in general and I’m especially impressed with what comes out of Taichung Taiwan!!! My question is this, what other titanium framelocks have they ever released at this price point? I’m not even sure this is a flash batch. Even if it was a flash batch, I still don’t know what to do with this price tag. No doubt it’s 100% quality made all around and premium materials.

Side note, the pivot design looks incredible!!! Somewhat reminds me of a Robert Carter BBMV2 pivot.

Are they just pricing them based on secondary market pricing at this point? I don’t blame them but geez, around $450 with taxes and shipping puts this in a league of its own. Hell, the re-release of the Slysz Bowie was $375ish and this was because the original Slysz Bowie became one of the most hyped and sought after Spydercos of all time and commanded crazy secondary prices.

Has there ever been any other regular production, limited, sprint run, or flash batch run that was $420?

Also, something to now consider and this will make hardcore Spyderco collectors mad but I cannot ignore the fact that I can buy a Sebenza on this forum for $400 shipped along with many other high end, high quality folders in the $450 range. Just adds another layer of complexity in the overall discussion.

I have my original receipt. It was $432 in 2016 dollars, and the dollar has lost significant value since then. In 2022 dollars this would be around $476.

Spyderco seems to be smoking their own supply lately (pun intended based on the knife name and price). If you want a real laugh go look what they priced the upcoming Paysan at. They've truly convinced themselves they're at custom level quality. I have no problem with their knives, but have never come across a single one that was even remotely close to a CRK or Hinderer in terms of quality. They certainly don't have the same service and warranty they do either.

Thanks for bringing this knife to attention. I'm not a huge cleaver pocket knife fan but have to admit, this is one good looking cleaver I'd take a swing at. However at $420?! Can we not even get a no but a Hell No! :p

Spot on, thanks to the aftermarket fools contributing to the near double secondary prices of the Slysz, Spyderco jumped on the wagon. Problem is, it isn't the same wagon but a decked out trolley cart trying to keep up with the wagon. We are talking $420 and the blade is barely reaching for 3" and though it looks bitchin', looks can only go so far. Sometimes I just don't get it.

Why, why in the world has Spyderco not brought back the Slysz like months if not a year ago!? Bring back the original wagon! Not with a few changes here and there but the exact same, unless you wish to offer upgrades like some limited with CF backspacers and Damasteel blades. Otherwise the very exact same and you can put that puppy at $450 and it will sell like Lexus's offered for $13K. What the Slysz has over this "SmokePipe" is size and length, pure comfort ergonomics, no hotspots, and a blazing good blade finish. Even the Nirvana had the bigger blade length and an integral handle so no qualms with pricing there.

Sometimes you make me wonder Spyderco.🤷‍♂️ Now if this was around $250 or a little higher than the Techno 2, I'd give it some consideration. I mean, you are already saving $$ by having it produced in the Tai-place vs. here in the U.S so c'mon. Making another good point, the OP points out at $420 you are now competing with the likes of Hinderer and Chris Reeve and good luck to any company that wants to enter that realm as they are two companies very, very hard to compete with.

Agreed!!! $250 and these would have sold out in minutes. I bet these will sit on the shelfs at $420. All flippers will all pass at this price which will leave the hardcore Spyderco enthusiasts driving the demand alone.

Would like to get a production number on this release. However, there is zero mention of Flash Batch or Limited/Sprint Run for this model so collectibility might be down the tubes as well. Really odd.

Darn if that Stovepipe isn't even uglier than the Carribean Salt I recently bought!

Like the Slysz Bowie and the Techno and the SpydieChef, the Stovepipe has a frame that partially blocks the Spydie Hole. This baffles me, because the Spydie Hole is the main reason I buy Spydercos. I could see that maybe with a kitchen knife, finger flicking might not be as important as with a pocket knife, but still, it seems like a major design flaw to me.

Please note that the Nirvana and Paysan were also integrals. The Stovepipe is a standard Ti framelock.

Also, the Slyzz Bowie had a user friendly, broadly attractive design. The Stovepipe is pretty eccentric and unfriendly to general carry.

As far as my opinion, Spyderco has been jumping the shark for years with both pricing and new release priority. It's a huge disappointment, as they have been my favorite knife company for nearly 20 years.

Very good points regarding the integrals in making price comparisons! I also haven’t bought any Spydercos that they produce with the hole partially blocked.

Hinderer quality? 😏 I’ve had multiple XMs, sold the lot aside from my Bowie. It has vertical play and has been to The Ranch twice for warranty work. Both times it’s come back with no play, just to develop play again after a couple of openings. I messaged them and they stated it was “within spec”. Honestly, I’m not even sure they did anything the second time around. Every single Spyderco I own runs better than the Hinderer.

There is a reason the first run will sell out immediately. I expect it to be top notch. Just like the other spydies I own. I understand if they aren’t some peoples cup of tea. They are mine. Everything is going up on price. Sadly, I think we might as well get use to it.
