Stag Saturday - Let's See Some Traditional Stag!

This Shrade model 275 clasp knife (5 1/2" closed) was part of a NKCA Founders Museum 1980 commemorative set of four knives by Case, Fightn' Rooster, Kissing Crane, and Schrade. There were 2,600 sets made; this knife is from set no. 1016. As I understand the story, many (most?) sets were broken up to sell the individual knives, particularly after collectors realized that the Case appaloosa bone sunfish was the only smooth bone sunfish that Case had ever made and it skyrocketed in value.

WOW, is there ever some great stag out today! I've got this Fight'n Rooster this morning.

That's really nice looking, Jeff. That shield placement looks to be pretty unique to me. I don't recall seeing one placed like that.

Fight'n Rooster has done that on a few knives, though I've never seen any other maker do so. Here's another one.

That seems to be the widest part of the gunstock handle for placement, albeit the bottom of the mark side. Looks good.

Another fine Stagurday!

Here’s some crappy pics of a Loveless Utility Hunter made by Bob Dozier I picked up recently. Excellent matched stag, excellent contouring, excellent everything! (comes in at 8-7/8” OAL)

Ain't she purdy!

I'm really hoping this one grows on me. I've wanted to like stag for a while, and some of it that I see I really do like. The Churchill is an exceptional pattern.

"Excellent everything" covers it.

That's a really good looking knife. I'm working on picking up a 76. It seems like one of those patterns that I'm sure collectors love, but is also a great knife to use and carry.

Nice addition, Jake! I really like a stag, tapered tang drop point. That's a beauty. Does Bob use a lot of CPM-154? Every Dozier I've ever seen was D2.

Most of all the Dozier production knives, marked with the “Arkansas Made Dozier” stamps (usually a circle maker’s mark) are made in D2 although they’ll put out some A2 and a few other steel variants as well, such as PSF-27 (spray formed billet D2).

The true customs that Bob handmakes himself are marked with the Loveless style football logo and come from his personal workshop. It used to be in Springdale, AR, now it’s in St. Paul. The Loveless style knives are almost always done in 154CM or CPM154 since it holds true to the steel that Loveless used) but he’s also used CTS-40CP, D2, CTS-XHP, and a few others.

Thanks for that, Jake. My memory would have been jogged if I'd seen the maker's mark. Love the tapered tang and dynamite stag. Congratulations on acquiring that fine knife.
