Stag Saturday - Let's See Some Traditional Stag!

I’ll have to buy myself one of them Colts, that’s very nice.

EDIT: I see the ones with the rampant Colt logo shield aren’t so easy to find...I’ll keep looking...
Thanks, Jay. :) A couple of years ago, Colt sold several patterns in stag for a brief time, at a price I found hard to believe. I now regret that I didn't pick up several more of them than I did. Colt is no longer a knife brand, although some of their patterns are now being produced by Rough Ryder, and a few others by Marbles. So you're right about Colt stag patterns being hard to locate these days. All you can do is be persistent and lucky in watching auctions, sales sites, etc. It also helps to let people in this forum know what you're looking for, e.g. in your sig; there are a lot of helpful folks here who might give you a heads up if they happen to see something in which you might be interested. Good Luck!:)

The rest of the blades are here.
From a friend that knows way more than I do. "Tweedale's book says the Butler firm dates back to before 1774, and GEORGE Butler became boss and namesake circa 1837. Butler's acquired the ART (in the oval on the pile side of the blades) word mark in 1861. However, ENGLAND dates this knife after 1890, and the high quality construction suggests before 1915."
Levine's says the KEY mark was from Steer & Webster 1867.
The pattern is a sportsman's knife as opposed to a horseman's knife, although both are similar. The hook instrument is for gutting birds. The large curved instrument is a hoof pick. Probably more than you wanted to know!
A fascinating and wonderful knife Mike. Thanks for sharing it.

That is a real nice example of the breed, Mike!!
A beauty!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks Charlie. They must have had strong suspenders back in the day. As a mutual friend of ours would say, "It's like having a potato in your pocket."

Thanks Fodderwing. I have wanted one for a while and just kind of stumbled on this one. Custom knife maker Ken Erickson made a horseman's knife years ago that I got to see in person at Blade. I think Gus, a former moderator here, ended up with it.

Augie, Thanks to you as well. I have seen yours and they are quite nice.

Arther Wright Bowie, right? I’ve been looking at them, how’s the edge, have you sharpened it? Is that the sheath that came with yours?
Hi knifeRep your right it's an Arthur Wright . The blade came semi Sharp but took no time to bring it to a good edge . The sheath that came with the knife was a little flimsy . I had this one made custom from a sheath maker on here https://www.bladeforums.com/members/claude-scott.292777/

I'd love to see more of this knife if you get the chance to post em.

With the time change I think its still Saturday.
Absolutely gorgeous.

joeradza joeradza Alan that is a beautiful piece of cutlery. I am surprised it's a blade forum?

I was looking at them on Heinnie Haynes site, they appear to be a great buy. I'd have to do what you did on the sheath, that's a nice pairing you have

Thanks Jay. A handsome Laguiole indeed. That's some hefty stag on that bad boy. Very nice.
Thanks, you can tell the stag was cut from one piece, these are very reasonably priced for a carbon steel Thiers Laguiole, you can find them for ~ $100, most of the European ones are double that, some triple...
