Steel Snobs: Your favorite steels?

S30V and S35VN, I have more knives in these steels than any other steel. They work for me, fairly easy to maintain and decently corrosion resistant.
Love me some Rex45, Cruwear, K390, 4V, 10V, M4, 3V, S125V and a few others I can’t think of. I like to try different steels to see if they’re really that much better. At the end of the day, they all need sharpening or touch up.

I don't consider myself a steel snob as I have and use many different types, but if I had to make a short list of my personal favorites ...

I actually prefer carbon steels for almost everything and if I must choose favorites ... Cruwear, D3V and AEB-L are head and shoulders above the rest *in my preference only* (before someone gets forum rage and fusses). I like 52100 and W2 quite a lot also, I've not tried some of the other "unicorn heat treated" metals so I can't speak on those although I think they would serve me incredibly well also.

On the stainless side ... I probably own more S35VN than any other stainless and still think it's a really well balanced steel, but if my arm's twisted to list favorite stainless steels for knives they would be AEB-L, Nitro-V, 14C28N, and an attractive new little gem Magnacut. I only have a bit of experience with Magnacut, but so far it's been a real solid choice.

You can probably tell by my choices that I don't mind sharpening a blade if it needs it and I put a much higher weight on toughness and ease of sharpening over a steel that may hold it's edge awhile longer, but it also take longer to sharpen when it's needed. And most of those type I've had chipping with ... thus my choices.

Now for me this shiney new kid on the block has performed well, but I've not had enough of it to speak on it much one way or the other. That said so far I am happy with it even if I still reach for my old ugly carbon blades 9 of 10 times.

The other stainless I listed hang pretty well with many of the carbon choices so they've earned a place in my tool drawer.

Oh crap ... this isn't Friday evening, and I shouldn't be sitting here by a fire poppin a top or 3 and rambling about stuff this countryboy knows little about ... dohhhhh. Good news is the coolers nice and cool and full ... Geonbae 🍻

Steel! steel! how great our zeal!
To cut and brandish our greatest weal!
Respite me not from cutting toils,
Oh spare me from that sad turmoil,
That I should have not a sharp edge,
Be it toothy, plain or with a swedge.

Let alloys one and all show face,
Each one I gave its own embrace,
For all have good to them unique,
I learn when each I give a peek.
So to thy question I answer now,
All steels bring glee to this man's brow.

No AI used, but one duck duck go search for "rhymes with toil"

My favorite color is plaid

That's my belt rank in kung fu.

I've never used/owned a knife made with M4, yet.....
I really love M2, and everything I've heard from people is that M4 is way better!
I'm just not ready for That.... Haha
If you like folders Blade HQ has it really dialed in with Benchmade or Spyderco.

My favorites have changed over the years. Currently, MagnaCut, ApexUltra, 4v, zwear/cruwear, m4, k390, 10v, 15v and most recently asp-2053 I am really impressed with it so far.

What about BD-1N?

I have a Spyderco PM-3 LW and chipped it yesterday.

I was shocked at how easily it chipped.

I should have used my old Buck 110.

My favorites would be these:
CPM-3V
S390
K390
1095
80CrV2

I prefer carbon steels and tool steels over stainless steels.
I really avoid cheap stainless steels.

HiSpeed LoDrag M4

That said, I also like whatever stainless Buck Knives uses...I've found it to be real easy to sharpen very sharp and it seems to hold an edge through a reasonable amount of abuse.
