strorage tips? help

I use Bullfrog Lubricant & Rust Blocker oil with VPI occasionally when I put things away in storage. Seems to protect forever, even when wet. Never had anything rust, gun or knife.

Copied from what I just posted on another thread.

I left a Straight Steel Heart in it's sheath, a High Desert Low ride, in a tool box in the back of my truck, that I was at the time using to haul Travel trailers cross country for about two years with no oil, just to see how it went, the knife got darker, sort of black on the uncoated parts of the handle, that was all.

It now sits in the Safe, having been wiped with either WD-40 or CLP once, maybe 3 or 4 years ago, I pull it out once in a while to throw at trees, no need to oil it again so far.

I have a few Satin Busse knives that I wipe off carefully with a micro-fiber cloth any time they get touched by Human Hands, like the Back and handle of the original Game Warden I pulled out last week while thinking about posting a picture, no oil, just a blue micro fiber cloth.

Every few years I wipe down the Fancy Busse Knives with what ever spray oil is handy at the time then wipe them pretty much dry with the same Micro-Fiber cloth mentioned.

That is all.

Added,

Relax, unless you are in some kind of corrosive environment, just make sure that the finger prints get wiped off and any kind of oil will prolly do just fine.

At least for the INFI knives.

Last week or so week I purchased a Straight Steel Heart that had not been oiled and had sat in its kydex sheath dirty from throwing at a live tree in my old back yard for at least 4 years, I just washed it with some Simple Green and wiped it down with a dry blue micro fiber cloth and then with an slightly oily cloth and it looks just fine, .300", slotted screws, light wear, mostly from killing that tree in my back yard some years ago, rust was a non-issue.

So wipe the finger prints off, wipe lightly with an oiled cloth and just put them away, I do and I have some pretty nice Busse knives.(ok, maybe Lots)

for storage, i want to say cosmoline. i've cleaned it off of some old C&Rs that had been sitting for a very long time. ofcourse, the cleaning it off part is the pain. then there is possible discoloration of anything non-metal.

The other thing that an old friend told me about and I have done for years, is put a 15 watt light bulb in the safe. I keep most of my knives in a gun safe that is about 5' tall and don't have to baby them or give them constant attention. The 15 watt bulb is in a "clamp" fixture and it stays lit as long as they power is on and it seems to sunk any moisture out of the safe. The bulbs generally last about 4-6 months.
Good luck

This is the same premise as the plug in dehumidifier sticks often sold with safes. Low wattage heat generation to dissipate moisture.

I would like to try some cosmoline, any one got any photos of slab discoloration due to the use of cosmo? What methods are good for removing that stuff when it is time to end the storage?

i wipe mine off with the same oily rag i use on my pistols, wd-40, rem oil, breakfree, what ever is with in close reach. no problems at all. like papa said, get the finger prints of the satin and you're ready to roll.
