Summer Pants: Cotton Canvas vs NYCO vs Nylon?

I like the Propper brand BDU's in 65/35 Poly/Cotton Battle Rip. They are durable and comfortable and dry pretty quick:)

Yeah, I forgot about BDU pants. I like Olive Drab and it's hard to find them in NYCO. I prefer the NYCO because I know they wear like iron, but you do find the poly/cotton mixed BDUs to be just as durable?

I love the O.D. also but I just got a pair in brown 65/35 poly/cotton Battle Rip and they seem super tough. Even the pockets are the same material which is stronger than most pants I've had that had thin pocket material that wears out to quick. I've never had the nylon cotton blend but Propper makes them in 50/50 ; check 'em out :)

Lots of good info here!

I'm also looking for the best material for 3-season outdoor pants. Summers can be hot here, which means a light, breathable material works best but, on the other hand, I often have to scramble over large rocks and boulders when hiking, so abrasion resistance and durability are mandatory. Once in awhile I hike in the rain, so that is another consideration.

The best type of material for each of these conditions have completely opposite characteristics. Denim is good for abrasion resistance but it's heavy and, since it's cotton, soaks up a lot of water and takes a long time to dry (not an option for rain or snow, or for many wilderness situations). I've tried nylon pants but even though they were high-quality they showed a lot of wear, and even started tearing, after only a few hours scrambling over rocks.

I've never bought BDU's, or any cotton/poly blend, so don't know anything about them, but these seem to be the most popular. Do you think they would be best for my situation? Other suggestions?

Thanks!

i find that my 501 levis get a bit hot in the summer, and when i start to sweat they start to feel a bit tight in the leg (my leg muscles are a bit on the large side from biking and running).

i find that most often i wear consignment store dress pants that i get for between $.05 and $5.00, most of mine i got at the 5 cent mark though. i also wear these great cotton plain pants that i got at the gap several years ago. they are very light and loose and soft, but still protect against brush and bugs.

i don't usually wear shorts, because they don't do anything for protection. i figure if i'm going in shorts i might as well just go in my swim trunks and save a few ounces in my pack.

but this season i plan on saving up and getting a utilikilt for general wearing and hiking in.

Hey all,

Just wondering what pants you generally wear for brush bustin' from spring through fall? I like Carhartt cargos but they suck when wet. I also hate 100% nylon pants cause of the noise. I really want a good pair of olive drab cargo/convertible pants that are made of a NYCO material, but i can't seem to find a decent pair. What do you like to wear? Any suggestions?

Filson double tin pants, you'll never look back.
