Superglue For Cuts

5 - Do NOT...repeat...do NOT use the accelerator with cyanoacrylate.

Ok im feeling ignorant again.. please enlighten me:

1. Why would one use 'accelerator' for 'instant glue'
2. What actually is the accelerator?, and is toxicity the reason not to use it?

Accelerator causes the cyanoacrylate to cure real fast...
Think about adding burns to the cut, and you won't use it...

I've used accelerator on balsa and it will actually cause the wood to smoke.....ouch!

Visine...that's great. I have that on me (contacts) more often than superglue and it never occurred to me. And it's sterile !

I've used ordinary off the shelf Super Glue a few times on minor cuts and got good results. Quick and easy healing.

Please don't use superglue unless it's a last resort guys. Not only is it not sterile but if the wound is not cleaned out properly you can lock in the bacteria by gluing it. Get some liquid bandage from the store if you don't want to use a regular bandaid. I can understand not wanting to go to the ER because I have done that myself but that is what walk in urgent care clinics are for. Try and find one in your area if you can; that's exactly what they are there for and it would definitely be a better choice than superglue. Also be careful of that triple antibiotic ointment. A lot of doctors think that product does more harm than good; if you put it on the wound and then seal it with a bandage the wound cannot dry out and heal as well. This actually puts it at more risk for infection in the long term.

Oh and PS: use alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to clean the wound not paint thinner. Not that you would probably really get sick or something from using a small amount of paint thinner but you really don't want those toxins in your blood stream and alcohol (use isopropyl or even the bottle of jack daniels for last resort not methanol) is just as cheap.

i dont think you should have super glue on your contacts :)

I state the following without prejudice :D ( I say this to protect myself from wrath:eek:)

Just an observation: If someone says he wants to attach a grinding disk to his drill, we all tell him to be safe, dont mess around with tools, wear safety glasses, wear a helmut etc.... Why do we condone putting chemicals along open wounds. There are likely to be all sorts of additives in 'cyanoacrylate' that are not designed to be in a human bloodstream.

I still prefer attention from two hot nurses.

Superglue does not like moisture or flexion, and will shart to degrade into brittle flakes. If these flakes are under the skin, inflammation can result. Superglue is also mildly toxic, but some folks are hypersensitive. Skin Shield liquid bandage has antiseptic & anesthetic properties, is flexible, is water resistant, is breathable, and will stay on for a week (especially if you use 2 or 3 coats). Comes in a nail polish vial with a brush. And it is cheap (2 for $4.99 at Walgreens).

I use cyanoacrylate (superglue) all the time. My brother who is a traumacenter nurse gave me some tubes of Hystoacril sterile wound glue. It turns out it active ingredient is n-butyl-2cyanoacrylate.

If you are willing to pay the visit to the E.R. and get a medical bill for a FDA approved sterile glue that is your choice.

I just use my trusted tube of "superglue" and untill now it performed flawless.
It's also a great tool to have in your car or survival kit.

Just my 2 cents

"Chiggar Rid" is the bomb! I believe its made with colodian which goes on wet, then solidifies to a semi-flexible coating. It burns like a bitch at first, but is medicated to reduce itching (read pain).

Plus it's formulated for human use and doe not contain cyanide.
