Hello Guy and guys ;)
I recently did a weekend of solo winter camping and brought my trusty GSO6 with me. The knife was used to make tent pegs, to batton my firewood and to make feathersticks to light fire. This knife remained extremely sharp even after battoning all the wood I needed for two days. More than I can say than for other knives I own. All in all it performed even better than expected even in -30oC weather. After that outing I can say that I have 100% confidence in this knife as a serious winter camping / survival tool.
Here is a little in the field video review.
Sorry for the mumbling but it got seriously cold LOL

Very cool review. Thanks for sharing. I've been wanting a heated tent for a while now but it just isn't in the budget. :thumbdn:

Winter camping is somewhat expensive if you do hot tenting.
But the advantage is that you can dry up all your wet gear and stay several days. I was lucky and scored that tent for a very good price.

Your belt loop looks like Bhk's leather backer from TKC. Did you do any modification to attach it?

Knife chop... I see you are quite the specialist :D
I might of had to drill an extra hole for it to fit nice.

Nice review. I may look into a 6 at this point. A little off topic but who makes that stove of yours?

Great vid!
I knew you were in Canada as soon as I read -30C lol
I can't believe you went camping in such weather..I'm on ottawa and barely make it from the car to the building in the winter :D

Leon believe it or not but with the canvas tent and the stove the temperature got pretty warm when the stove was running. I would say around positive 15 to 20 in the tent. The only problem is that while I slept the fire died down so back to -30oC in the morning LOL. You really want to move fast to get the fire going once you are out of the sleeping bag !

The stove I use is a kni-co stove made in the USA. Relatively light weight and solid. I like it a lot.

Thanks

I have never heard of a heater for a tent that is so awesome!! Where can I look to find that baby and do you have to use specific tents or can you use the heater with any tent? I cant wait for the GSO 6 to go into production, but it will be worth the wait!!! :)

I've been trying to resist temptation! Looks like I might put a preorder in for the 6 after watching this. Thanks for the video

To use a wood stove in a tent it is much safer to use a fire-retardant canvas tent (sunforger material). The tent I have is made by ATUK in Canada but there are other great options such as winter trekker tents.
The stove I used is the Kni-Co stove. Rugged yet light enough to transport with a sled.
Winter camping is awesome: you can combine it with ice fishing, hunting trapping etc...

I'm glad that the video was useful.
I suspect that the new GSO 6 will be even better. I will certainly review it when I get mine !

while i don't yet have a cool setup like that, my favorite aspect of winter camping = no bugs! nothing spoils the return from a fun trip like lime disease...

and to keep this relevant... I can't wait for the 6 either!!!

Yea those bugs are a hassle.
I think that the new heat treat, the new handle and the 90 degree spine will make the new GSO 6 the grail knife in my book.

considering it has the exact same handle as the 5.1, I think you may be right :) until the fabled GSO-20 of course....

I love the old gso6, the only thing that make it better would be a longer more shapely handle. I can't wait!

Is the new heat treat you speak of the same heat treatment they are using on the GSO12? Thanks
