While sitting here at my local Kaiser Medical Plaza waiting to have my stitches taken out, I was musing and thinking about what constructive suggestions we as Survivors! could present for Team Survive! to review and mull over! Granted that some of them will be laughed out loud perhaps because of naïveté but someone and somewhere may come up with an impetus to help Survive! Let's not trivialize things by suggestions such as, "hurry up and finish up knives!". If you think that you have a legitimate suggestion, try to qualify it!

I could just be bored out of my mind but here is mine:

Increase the prices of the Factroy 2nds to match those of the 1sts and here is my logic: why leave $20 per unit on the table when Survive! Can easily charge the same amount for an "ugly Betty" just because the buyer will be receiving the 2nd in far shorter time than the preorder buyers. Furthermore, I would also charge for S&H on the 2nds in addition to the steel and the handle scales upgrades.

I don't think that Survive will lose any business at all as there's always more demand than supplies. I have the results of the secondary market on the exchanges and eBay to back up my suggestions. This will also put matters in a much more level playing field, i.e, if you want a prime and proper 1st you will wait out and endure the waiting period knowing that you will get a perfect knife. If you are in a hurry and can't wait and want to purchase other knives, try your luck during the Mondays Sales knowing that you will pay equally or even more for a slightly blemished knife. This simple extra revenue will also add enough to budget for some more personnel.

Tell me as to why I am wrong to make this suggestion or/and add yours!

I may have laid an egg with this one! Not my first rodeo and this won't be my last one either :D

Here is my input:

1.) You should be able to take your own stitches out. Seriously. This is the Survive! forums! I've been taking my own out since I was a teenager, I even took a class on how to put them in. That has not happened yet though. Maybe staples first... Time to up your skills Brother!

2.) Guy has tried to hire people, but from my understanding, it's not that they can't afford them, it's that Guy has a very high standard and people were not meeting it. That being said, there are obviously qualified people out there. I've bought plenty of absolutely perfect Sebenzas, and they are considerably more complex and have WAY more machine steps than any of the Survive! fixed blades. All are made by employees.

3.) I think they should also charge full price for a second. Cuts the customers waiting time and reduces pressure on Guy to keep knives vs binning them.

4.) I think for market protection, he should take a spring loaded center punch and put a dimple right out by the steel spec or something similar. This way less people will get screwed buying a second thinking it is a first, and sure it's ugly, but that's why it's a second in the first place.

Now, flame on!

Justin, but the nurse was quite easy on the eyes and very pleasant too! Do I get a pass now? :D

We (the Survivors!) support this USA based business by giving them a lot of leeway in our waiting period anticipation because they have great products and do not compromise on quality and ingenuity. That said, we also want this business to prosper, to expand and to HIRE Americans. Hopefully ID will be better for them in those terms than PA.

Glad you concur. I honestly do not think that they will lose any business. OK, items may not fly off the shelves as quickly as 10-15 minutes on Mondays, but so what? It just will make it more difficult on those who are shamelessly hawing these on the auction sites at 50% or more markup. I am not against free enterprise but I am against Survive! short changing itself on such a simple solution!

How about unwanted double ferro notches on the spine to mark that it's a 2nd? J/K... J/K :D

P.S. thanks for the email which I'll be responding in due course.

Yes, in that circumstance, you should go back to have her check that it is not infected. This is the only reasonable course of action.

I do think they need to make a mark somewhere one cannot miss it, to cut back on people misrepresenting the 2nds.

I like the seconds mark. If said salesperson wouldn't photo it for you if you asked them, said salesperson most likely is hiding something and it wouldn't be someone I would most likely do business with. Part of internet purchasing is to know you product and ask the right questions and don't allow your self to be burned.

Then again there is a few dishonest ones out there that will do what ever to make a buck.

I own only one S!K and it's a 2nd, picked up on a Monday sale. Given the minor flaw, which consists of a small dot on the blade that's smaller than the designator imprints being discussed, I feel it should have been a 1st. Its not a cause for a discount. In fact, my feelings are that every blade sold by Survive! is essentially discounted. For what you get compared to the market, the S!K knives are under priced by possibly as much as 50%, certainly at least 25%.

Anyone who knows how supply and demand retail strategies knows the way it's supposed to work is that increased pricing would slow down sales some but still increase profits enough to hire competent staff. I read somewhere on this forum that the guys considered both price increases and hiring and for now, declared these things won't work for the company. That doesn't quite seem right to me but hey, I'm not running the show so maybe there are some forces work I don't understand. It's probably going to be tougher to find the right staff given the location the company has moved to, simply due to the lesser population- not that anything can be done about that.

I do feel the knife I was fortunate enough to acquire should probably have been offered to someone who preordered back in early 2015, the "flaw" described, and that person given the opportunity to fill their order. Of course, that means one sale and not a preorder then an additional sale so cash flow is impacted.

The above stated, Guy runs his show the way he does for his own reasons. The market will dictate whether or not those reasons make sense and so far it seems acceptable to the masses, albeit with some grumbles here and there from the production bottleknecking.

I'll take "S!K folder for $200", Bob.
Hell yeah!!
I would be happy with any of the steels that Survive! uses!

An extra mark is a great idea on a Factory 2nd. Maybe a dimple under the thumb jimping on the back of the knife. It would probably be a pain to do though.

Flex fit hats........ We need some flex fit hats with just the simple logo on them. :)

I think the consensus for another marking other than the divot underneath the handle scales is gathering momentum. Obviously the divot makes sense because Guy presumably sifts through all these well before they are ready to be fulfilled but another visible marking will weed out some of the scamming going on, vis a vis, selling 2nds by third parties who do not disclose the entire statement of facts.

Speaking for myself as the two left-handed imbecile that I am, I have already farqued up one set of fasteners so I feel the pain of the other two left-handed maroons like me :)

the only thing I suggest is to ignore everyone's suggestions, you know what they say about opinions...

Well prices are already beginning to rise, the 2nds will eventually follow suit but I'm good with that as well, the extra personnel would certainly help move things along hopefully better as long as they can keep up w/Guy's and the teams standards.

Price parity idea between 1st and 2nds has started to gain traction. Admittedly I'm an impulsive and impatient buyer who goes for 2nds and I have no problem paying on par plus paying for options and S&H for the 2nds, because I feel that I was given a VIP pass to join the party in lieu of people who have been waiting for yonks. You will not hear a squeak outta me and my alike. Raise those darn prices (on your 2nds) so to get someone else employed and added to your cadre at the workshop!

Casino, your heart is in the right place, but I think this thread may be on course to where a lot of our similar discussions lead. They want to keep prices down, they want to keep innovating and making the best knife possible at the cost of time, they don't want to hire anyone else.

Am I antsyer than I thought possible for a knife? Yes.
Do I want to keep a realistic outlook on how long their process takes? Yes.
Do I think they should change what they're doing? No.

I agree with silver on all points. I am not a patient person by any means but I want s!k to do them and keep doing it, that's what I bought into. if I just wanted a knife there are many other places to go.
