Tanto Blades Suck with Example

So you cut yourself and it's the knife's fault and the stupid knife sucks.

Got it.

I happen to love my CS mini recon 1 tanto.

first off sounds like you need a lesson in how to not ever cut towards your body parts. Second..... you actually wiped blood off a banana and said it was good? That was contaminated and should have be tossed

Did anyone know bananas could be so funny?

OK I finally got a chance to sit down with a cup of coffee and read all the posts, and no this post was not a joke; and knowing how dumb and absurd using a knife to cut a banana is, I thank you for bringing that hilarity to the next level, and then the level above that. I was trying to compare, perhaps with no success, the spyderco delica 4 to the coldsteel recon mini (the only premium knives I own), and in that comparison the recon mini is heavier with a much thicker blade made of a stronger, more durable steel (you can see the comparison on this site) and so it can be used for tougher tasks and take more abuse than the delica. So I used the word “powerful” for which was the epicenter for humorous portrayal.

The banana of blood event is the complete opposite of how I normally am. So this one situation stands out as the most egregious thing I've done in the 11 months I've worked there. I definitely do regret that. This wasn't a random customer, I've been grating her tumeric roots for awhile now and not charging her bc she's a nice old lady going thru chemo. So I handed her the container of tumeric and she told me she wanted organic bananas but there were no bunches of three. And so I decided to show off and give her a nice straight cut 3 banana bunch rather than just ripping them apart. Alot of things went through my mind after I jabbed myself, the first one was "god damn you tanto point" and “you idiot newbie” then "get away from her asap". My last thought was that it was only the pigmentation of blood attached to the outer surface of the banana's skin, and it was such a small spot of discoloration that it was completely safe for her to eat. Honestly I didn't have time to give her another banana. I had to leave because it was starting to run down my hand.

Nope. No blood on customer's food for any reason ever. You messed up big time here and are still not understanding. You passed along your blood via food to person going through chemo? Great.....

Problem Solved :emmersed:

Ah dang it. Now I like this guy.
Why did you have go ahead and be good humored about the whole thing.... Ya jerk.

He admits he F'ed up by passing the blood. Don't do that again. Especially for people going through Chemo who's immune systems might be compromised. I am sure she would be happier if you had just said "Woops I cut myself" and got her a new set of bananas.

Just don't do it again. Everyone makes mistakes.

A. Agreed.

B. I agree with your sentiment, but that is a poor analogy. Bananas easily come apart by hand, a zip tie not at all. I always use a knife for those and have never had a problem. Scissors work too.

Yeah seriously how else might you untie a zip tie?

The same old woman came in yesterday and said she only wanted 4 organic bananas, after cutting her tumeric, but there were no bunches of 4. I picked up a bunch, tore off two bananas and handed her 4. It was funny to think of the comments during this, wondering whether or not to grab a chainsaw or simply use my hands. It doesn't matter what it is, there is always a couple "ah hah" moments when learning something new, which can at times lead to some embarrassment and maybe even regret.

You can slowly round off the tip of a tanto by .5- 1mm without changing the look of the blade. Even if you look at it very closely you can't really tell. In the event you do accidentally jab yourself, we all make mistakes, this at least offers some protection.

In inches, I think 1/16" you'll be able to tell but 1/32" you wont be able to tell. Functionally, the tip still went right through thin sheet metal. It's a purely cosmetic change.

You could try taking the tip of your tanto and pointing it directly at your sharpening stone. So the knife is at a 90 degree angle to the surface of the stone. Now with the knife pointing straight down at the stone and the very tip of your tanto touching it grind vigorously back and forward until your tip is gone.

There ya go! :D

Insults and aggression does not advance the discussion. Please refrain from doing this.
BITE ME

post deleted....happy now?

The things is, we should know better.

Two wrongs do not a right make.

I'm glad the OP has the good nature to take the ribbing as it is. Made of stern stuff, he is. :thumbup.

Actually, maybe that might have been in poor taste, circumstances being what they are! Sorry! :D

Went yesterday to the bathroom of a place where I eat some nice tuna and tomato sandwiches many weekends a year. First time I went to the bathroom there, and I got the wrong door, entering the kitchen instead.
They had some veggies next to the half-done sandwitches, dishes and food. 90% of the more than one hundred tomates were ripe, some had funghi and white mold and mildew on them.
Half of them were split open because of putrefaction or microbacterial activity. Cucumbers, squash and onions were not much better.

Left without having my sandwich. Not again.

This is the first time I've read a thread this long in one sitting.
Laughed out loud enough that a coworker questioned my sanity.

Here's something for all the naysayers who thought a bit of blood smeared on a banana was worthy of sever chastising and corporal punishment.

I was self-employed for 15 years doing commercial refrigeration and had been in just about every kitchen in my area at one time or another: schools, fast food, hospitals, restaurants, etc. and I can tell you where not to eat...
but that list is waaaaay too long...
so, I'll tell you where CAN eat...

YOUR OWN FREAKING KITCHEN

I have seen things...bad things...

We all hear horror stories about things that happened somewhere else, but it pretty much happens EVERYWHERE else.

took the front electronics control panel off a slush machine in a popular (nationwide) food chain type place and was immediately overrun by cockroaches...falling on the floor, on my shoes, up my arm...
yeah, there's an "eeeeew" for ya...

yogurt machines not being kept properly and mix running out the rear seal into the machine and all over drive motors and such...did ya know that yogurt eats away paint?
oh, and maggots growing inside the machine....

saw a guy cutting up smoked briskets, he trimmed fat off with a knife before using motorized slicer, "flicked" the trimmings off the table into a trash barrel with said knife...then wiped the knife on the edge of the trash barrel...and continued trimming

was in a chinese resaurant just days before opening...some guys had a rather large hunk of frozen meat, set it ON THE FLOOR and commenced to cut it by batoning a large cleaver with a 2x4...

ever been inside a walk-in cooler that smelled like raw sewage?

guy was shaking what I thought was some type of curry onto chicken quarters, putting about 4 pieces per skewer then hanging the skewers on nails in the wall....

walking across a kitchen floor and stepping on pieces of food, egg shells, etc., dirty dishes in the sink, and the place hasn't even opened for business that day...manager had JUST then unlocked the door for me...

oh, and it's not always JUST in the kitchens with employees...
While working on a system at one of those serve yourself, all you can eat food bar places (nationwide chain) some goober picked up a pair of tongs, picked up a piece of boiled okra with tongs, took a bite of the okra, THEN put it on his plate...
didja catch all that?

These aren't the only things I've seen, just a FEW of the most memorable ones.

And it wasn't just that I saw something once in a great while, it was constant. If I worked for the health department there wouldn't be a kitchen open anywhere around here.

Although I agree OP should have grabbed clean bananas, before you go crucifying this poor guy, take a look at the bigger picture...

We live in a nasty world, folks

for what it's worth

Who is crusifying or suggesting corprol punishment. A bit an exaggeration don't you think. Chastising yes. None of what you describe is knowingly contaminating a food product with your own blood and possibly spreading a blood born pathogen to an old lady in chemo.

And even if it was, the old "other places do it too" is a poor justification for not telling this kid exactly how wrong he was.

For safety reasons, I modded the tip of my usual banana knife. These are organic bananas, so a more powerful steel may be required. I'll post a review later provided I still have fingertips with which to type.

That cleaver is awfully brave turning its back on a gang of bananas that are CLEARLY looking for trouble

No need for insults. The best way to handle a discussion like this is to educate, with a calm attitude and cool head. If someone wants to stay in the light of ignorance and refuses to learn something, that is their problem. By throwing an insult into the mix, you perpetuate the argument instead of helping to put it to bed.

I tend to like a tanto on certain occasions. The bad monkey is my only tanto in my edc and it stays in the rh hip pocket all the time every day
