Thank you, kind sir! I have been trying to find the original source for this quote. Tom Waits did a song either called or containing the phrase "I'd rather have a free bottle in front of me than a pre-frontal lobotomy" but I can't check it now because all my vinyl and my turntable are in storage. The phrase has also been attributed to Ernest Hemingway. Maybe I will head to the library tomorrow and get some help at the reference desk. A web search was unfruitful.
