The Arc Thread...

Time to get the mowers and 4 wheelers ready for tick season...

I'm on it.

I don't have either a Wave or a Surge.

The Arc is about the size of the original PST, I guess.

I believe PST (pronounced pssst!) is much thinner. In fact it's one of the thinnest Leathermans ever made. Sideclip is the thinnest as far as I know.

Took it camping last weekend. It was super useful and I never felt under tooled.
- hammer to break up ice bags and hammer in tent stakes
- knife blade for food prep and random cutting tasks
- scissors for fishing and random tasks
- saw for cutting down branches to make walking sticks to wade through slippery creek
- diamond file to touch up a chefs knife

The arc has my favorite tool set of all Leathermans. Perfect for edc and camping. It’s about the size of a wave btw.

Leatherman is rolling out a limited edition version of the arc with some additional coating on it. It costs extra, of course.

No other changes. Same tool set.

On a personal note, I finally got my hands on an Arc. I didn't buy one, I just got a chance to see what all the fuss is about. I really didn't feel like it was worth the money. It seems okay. Just not worth 230 dollars. It's simply not impressive enough to justify the high price tag.

I will say again, if Leatherman made a normal non-magnacut version of the Arc, then I'd consider buying one. They could definitely do it. It's not like they don't already have all the tooling. I'm continually baffled by their apparent unwillingness to do so.

I think they're happy being the "Snap-On" of multi tools. They're (mostly) American made and if you want one, you pay extra.

They're not competing with Walmart or China tools, nor do they care. They have a corner of the market covered, just like Victorinox.

I like their stuff.

The influencers have been moaning about their steel for decades and now they got it. I’m sure leatherman has lot of pressure to compete against Chinese multitools and the magnacut blade is great advantage in that regard.

It has felt like Leatherman has been moving towards lifestyle brand though rather than tool company. The 50 dollar black coat is another good example of that.

Sad to see it happening.

I know plenty of people who still use a Wave on the job and won't use anything else. Leatherman can't seem to figure out what to do next now that the patents on it have all run out. For a lot of people you're just never going to beat the Wave/Charge/Surge.

Yep!

Leatherman has displayed a definite lack of innovation for a while. They take a tool and make incremental improvements calling it a “new” tool.

What is a multi tool and what do your primary customers use them for?

I would posit that they are used when you don’t have multiple tools or don’t want to carry a toolbox. How much of an improvement can be had over what is already available for a reasonable price??
