The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist In your estimation, how would you rank the upcoming kukri against the Behemoth and Behemother choppers? I imagine it's got to be pretty much in between the two, maybe as powerful as the Behemother due to its thickness and weight, just not sure how the design of the kukri vs those other straight blades influences its chopping ability. Also, no mention of behind the edge thickness on the kukri yet either so I'm curious there too.

If this has been asked or answered before, I apologize as I must have missed it.

Thanks!

Not Nathan (wait… was I supposed to hashtag that?), but my past observations having used many large blades and kukris:

Kukris tend to have chopping abilities that punch above their weight class, due to their forward heavy geometry.

The Behemother is one heckuva chopper, and somewhat similar in specs (both with ~12” blades, with the Behemother about 3oz heavier going by the specs).

That said, I’ve used kukris and Large Camp Knives with similar length blades and fairly close weight, and that forward heavy geometry gave the kukri a noticeable advantage in how deep it bites with each swing.

There’s another interesting advantage I observed with the kukri: that angled blade, AND the forward heavy balance allowed me to chop through trees that were way too thick, simply because the angled geometry allowed me to continue chopping with OK efficiency, at angles that a straight blade wouldn’t, as the cut got deeper into a trunk that was way thicker than the blade length.

As mentioned, I can’t wait to test the CPK Kukri against my Behemother.

Nate’s already mentioned testing various kukris to see what some got right vs what some have gotten wrong, and I have no doubts about Nate optimizing the CPK Kukri for performance. If my guess is right, the Kukri has a good chance of taking the #2 spot for chopping power in the CPK lineup, and taking the #1 spot for 1-handed chopping ability (the K18’s two-handed chopping ability is pretty much impossible to beat with any 1-handed blade).

Thank you for that detailed reply! Exactly what I was after. Unfortunately I have virtually zero experience using a kukri so what advantages the design offered were something I couldn't help but wonder about and your explanation and experience was very helpful.

You're right, won't beat the K18, but I do wonder if it'll be equal to or possibly even better than the Behemother in outright efficiency as you also suspect.

I've held out on the preorder thinking I'd wait and get one later on a Friday sale or off the exchange but MAN, my willpower is weakening by the minute! Haha

#notnathan - that's how it's done lol jk

I own a behemoth and several other large blades. The behemoth chops really, really well and feels like it's much lighter than it really is. It's way better than any other large blade chopper I've ever used by a large margin.

A kukri's forward weight is going to make it chop very well; way above what you'd expect from a similarly sized large straight blade. Add to that the fact that you have the best chopper design team in the world making this kukri......it's going to chop way better than your expectations. They should probably rename it the "fukri" because it will f- up any other kukri. Honestly, it's probably going to be the best real-world chopper you've ever used.

I would be shocked if it didn't out chop my behemoth. It's going to be sweet.

I'm not picking up a kukri for several reasons, so I think I can honestly say I'm not biased.

Don't wait if you want one. Might not get a chance later.

Listen to this man! I got a DEK1 and a DEK2 in the preorder because I wanted swedges, but I held off on the DEK3 because I only wanted the vanilla version. Fast forward to today…I have no DEK3 and probably never will. 😭

But did I mention my 1&2?!!! They’re pretty awesome!!!

Do you ever see CPK offering titanium (maybe bronze) scales? I imagine it would be pretty intensive given all the contouring and milling etc, but it would also be pretty cool. Especially on something like the EDC or even the K20 ... CPK = Cyber Punk Knives???

I think it would throw off the balance and not really add any benefit

( don't listen to me I'm always wrong!)
