Recommendation? The Case Bowie Knife?

Edit - The plastic on the Case is a bit slippery too. If you've held or owned an Ontario mil issue machete, it's the same.

And if you get cake icing on it? Especially buttercream?!? Forget about it! :p

S SanLuisObispo , again, wall hanger or presentation? If you tell us we can help.

And, just for the record this is what the sandbar knife looked like (I believe it was the top one, the Forrest knife.)

Never mind the knife snobs, if you like it, then that's all that counts. Some people buy exclusive knives made from meteors and unicorn horns that could cleave the earth and can still shave arm hair only to keep them in a dark safe. They don't care about my opinion so why should you?
You're absolutely right. Thanks...

I asked what I did, because there's little information I could find about the Case Bowie. I was not aware for instance that it's not originally a Case design. That it descends strongly (including its hand guard, which looks better with a longer blade) from the WWII Collins No 18 US Army Air Core Survival Knife, which in turn derived from the Collins' #18 Machete, shown below.

At least now I'm aware of its history, the type of steel it's made of, etc. I also know now the handle is rather short, something that might not work for me. Thanks again.

I would heartily recommend that if someone wants to actually know what a Bowie knife is and is not that they wander over to the Bernard Levine knife identification forum and do some searches on some of the old threads for Bowie Knives. It might prove to be enlightening. I really don't consider myself a knife snob, but I have at least an inkling as to what a Bowie knife is and maybe more importantly what it is not. In the same way I won't buy a Pakistani wonder sword and think I've purchased Excalibur I wouldn't buy one of these things and think I had purchased anything that even remotely approximates a Bowie knife.

As has been mentioned previous if this thing makes someone happy <shrug> good on you and best of luck.

For fun go over to the Randall Made Knife site. They have some awesome Bowie’s.

What a “real” Bowie is, has somewhat been lost to time. There was more than one for starters. So different descriptions abound, some sources are questionable. You can really go down a rabbit hole and come out more confused.

To scratch the itch. You need to get a knife that looks like a Bowie to you. To be a knife guy, you need to get one that can be used, even if you never do.

The Buck 916 looks like a solid choice and it’s customizable.

S SanLuisObispo - mate, you ask a question and people provide some answers. All you are actually interested in is confirmation that your idea is a good one. There's probably a good reason the Case knife doesn't litter the internet with glowing reviews.
If you like it, get it. If you don't like the replies to your question as to the quality, stop trying to convince everyone who is basically saying don't get it.

The Buck 916 looks pretty sweet, but I'm seeking something with a 9"+ blade.

If ya wanna know what a bowie knife really is....
Score yourself a copy of Norm Flayderman's Book "The Bowie Knife. Unsheathing an American Legend"

It's out of print but still out there.
After you get your book you can contact your favorite knifemaker and have him make you one from the book :D

Again I would recommend doing a few searches over in the Bernard Levine's forum. He talks about Flaydermans book also. How and why it came to be, what you might find there etc. It's very enlightening and might save you the price of a book.... Or not....

Im not trying to be a jerk with this reply, so don’t take it wrong. I don’t really care what knife you get or how you spend your money.

You are turning up your nose at quality knives because of 1-1/2 of blade length. The Case Bowie meets all your parameters except the one about quality.
