The Cowbell Build Thread

I've been updating the last post in the Newsletter thread with the Dibs picks as they've come in. Three options left to choose from.

Scale fronts finished and topped with a coat of super glue to seal things up in that area.
Interesting color banding in the Opal G10 (far right).

Thanks for the Color display!!
Best wishes to all y’all!!

Interesting color banding on this G10. Running into this kind of thing is disappointing but I'm actually looking forward to how it turns out. It looks to be even through the piece so that is a good thing at least.

I emailed the Dibs and they're good with giving it a shot.

Just a reminder, one of the reasons I use the term "Dibs" on these instead of "Custom Order" is that when it's finished and you're not feeling it or had a financial issue come up or whatever you can always pass and we'll find it another home.

First time I've worked with this material and wanted to share my experience, it's rare that I gripe but this stuff is a nightmare. Paper micarta is by far the worst material I've ever worked with. As a finished product it's great and there's no integrity issues with it as a handle material but it's a nightmare to cut and grind. It clogs a 14tpi bandsaw blade into a smooth bar within a 1/2" of cutting and clogs a belt quickly. I had to clean the teeth out by cutting a piece of steel to break free the clogs. It just wants to melt. Even slowing cutting and grinding speeds way down it still happens just not as fast. Not sure if this is the norm with paper micarta but this piece is a terror to work with. No regrets but this might be the last square foot of paper micarta we see around here.

I've always heard that Richlite was just paper micarta but they're two completely different animals. Rchlite cuts, grinds, files and sands like an absolute dream, one of my favorite material to work with. If it came in more colors I would use it often maybe even exclusively on the Cowbells.

Has anyone else experienced this working with paper micarta or do I have a unique piece?

Someone could probably find better words to express this.

This is one of those little things that most people would probably overlook and it adds so much to these.

Could we use an update or what? Friggin knifemakers.

I'll have the last three epoxied today. Looking forward to how these colors work out. I was thinking about how I prefer natural colors on large knives but on small ones like these I really like the wild colors. Wonder why that is? Maybe small knives are like candy and larger ones are like a steak dinner?
