The history of the schrade 8ot from 1960 to the 2004 anniversary knives.

Here is one to tickle Ken's fancy. Serial number 001.

That knife has tickled my fancy, big time. I would like that one in my collection.
I am working on a blue bone knife, post a photo soon.

Here is an interesting 8 OT I just picked up.

I say "interesting due to two differences from the norm:

- the handles are not the typical sawcut delrin. They are a composition material, but they have a hard shiny surface, no sawcut marks, not the typical slightly tacky feel of delrinn.

- the blades are mirror polished (probably tumbled) rather than glazed finish.

Can anyone shed any light on this one?

cilohaefink, can you post a photo of the "nail-pull", that may help date it a little better.

Cilohaefink (I like that! Took me a few minutes to figure it out lol), That's one of many types of plastic that Schrade tried out after their bone supplier literally went up in smoke. There was general panic at that time since previously it was decided that the Schrade Walden knives would be exclusively made with bone handles from that very supplier. Yours looks like it might be the mahogany swirl material that was also tried on a number of the larger knives. It was very prone to shrinkage over time. Here's a shot of a SW pruner with those handles:

Here is another one. The scan does not show it, but embedded within the material is thousands of tiny almost invisible flecks of gold dust. It is brass dust or gold or who-knows-what.

Cal, that looks more like the OP's knife than my mahogany swirl handled example. I's say that's a match. I'll see if I can find out what that material is.

tongueriver,
Your knife is a Schrade "Classic Old Timer", with a blade etch - It could also be a Classic with a blade from the 2004 blue bone knife - or even from the 2004 wooden handled 8OT with the etch.
When the Schrade factory was closing down, there was a number of knives with that etch half finished around the factory. The number could have been a Salesman's number.
Some of my 2004 knives and knife sets are numbered; your "001" would indicate it was made to photograph for a flyer. Ken.

...or that is was made up as a sample for consideration by their number one customer at that point, Wal-Mart. Several very nice knives were submitted and rejected.

That knife, like a lot of the knives Schrade made in 2003 and 2004; is a beautiful and very collectable knife.
I know you have one of the anniversary sharp-finger with the wooden handles, that did not make it to production.
I have some of the Blue bone rope-cut anniversary knives, only one "SS finished" knife - the others without etch and shield.
Do you know if Schrade was still trying to sell knives to Wal-Mart, around 2003-04.
Have you seen any of the knives, the factory put together in 2004 with odd parts... Ken

Yes, I agree.

I know you have one of the anniversary sharp-finger with the wooden handles, that did not make it to production.

Yes. It is unknown how many were assembled and shipped. I also have one of the DS - "dual shield" anniversary Sharpfingers.

I have one also sans etch and shield.

Do you know if Schrade was still trying to sell knives to Wal-Mart, around 2003-04.

Yes. In fact I understand that they had a large order ready to ship when the receiver called the loan and refused to let them ship that final order.

Have you seen any of the knives, the factory put together in 2004 with odd parts... Ken

Of course. I think we all have and quite a few of us own one or more.

I have had dozens of OT Knives since 1972 and I have several OT8 including one I got from 1984 when I got out of HS.
Easy to sharpen and they stayed sharp. GREAT THREAD and I got Dad the 100 year one in the tin for Father's Day in 2004.
I am always looking for them in the Wild and on EBay.

What knife came in the tin? Was it the 34OT in the 100th. Anniversary tin? Or was it an 8OT? ... Ken.

I do like the smaller stockman (34OT) I have some good ones in my collection. Ken

Thanks for all the history, I've been carrying one of these for YEARS. Yes, it's beat up, but it's sharp and it's spent 20 or so years riding around in my pocket or a pack and it's played around in the woods a whole lot as well.

Nice yellow knife, is it an 881 or an 8OT.
I still use my old 881, I have had since 1973. KG
