The jackknife Challenge

No issues during day one (so far), except that I miss reaching in my pocket and feeling the reassuring bulge and heft of my usual EDC tools. The Peanut makes a fine worry stone, though.

I do need to reprofile my 'Nut to a more acute edge. The factory angle just doesn't zip through cardboard to my satisfaction.

Usual EDC (not included are keys and CCW). Remember, I don't always tote the one-hander. Total weight: 19.7 oz.

Challenge EDC. Total weight: 9.9 oz. I even down sized my flashlight!

I personally hate those little 4 way drivers. I never thought of regrinding them. I'll have to give it a try.I down sized and only carried a Vic Cadet for a long time and it handled everything very well. I don't think your going to find a problem with what your carrying. I haven't used the can opener on my SAK as a can opener in a very long time but I do use it alot as a hook for pulling pins and a mini scraper and the screwdriver tip for alot of screws.

A few facts about me: Male, 38, Married, 3 kids, first grandchild due in about 7 weeks. I am a nurse in primary care pediatrics. Very involved in the Masonic fraternity. Ride BMW motorcycles. Hunt, fish, camp and hike. Knife-knut since age 5. I hate peanuts. :D

A Mason with a taste for German engineering. Sure you're not me? :)

This did remind me to put the 4-way back on my keyring, though. I had to pull it off last time I flew.

Have carried the keychain screwdriver for 35+ years (notice how thin the hole is at the top), the little Sharp 260 Stainless penknife went in my jeans watch pocket all thru college. Then I became a Buckaholic and it went to sleep with the socks for 30 or so years.....300Bucks

Here we go for Day 2!

I reprofiled the large blade on the Peanut last night. It's a MUCH better slicer now.

I think that one of the things that I don't like about the pattern is that it's square-ish handle wants to roll in my big paws whilst in use. I don't believe that this is a major issue, though, as a slight grip change should steady things up nicely.

Off to work!

Day 3...freshly stropped Peanut goes into the pocket!

(I'm sure jonesing to tote my new stag Tiny Trapper...) ;)

Regular knife chores today, opened a bunch of boxes and broke them down for disposal.

I missed my SAK for the Phillips driver today. I changed out an otoscope/ophthalmoscope transformer unit in an exam table. This particular unit required 2 straight screws and 2 Phillips screws to be removed and replaced. The straight screws were no problem, but the Phillips were a pain to unscrew and then replace -so much so I broke down and went to the toolbox and got the real thing.

I am enjoying the light weight pockets.

Your pants pockets will thank you for this.

Try using the smallest bit on the 4-way for phillips. I find it usually works on number 2 size pretty decently. For use on smaller phillips, file a wee bit off the corners of the smallest 4-way bit. But usually the smaller one works.

Keep going, I'm rootin for ya.

Voltron also suggested filing one of the bits to fit the Phillips. I'll give it a try.

Peanut doing a little lite kitchen work -getting some hams ready for the oven tomorrow. Got to feed my Lodge Brothers!

Soooo, Todd, what are your gut level impressions so far?
1. The Peanut tends to want to roll in my hand. I'd do better with a one blade version -if there is such a critter. It has been plenty enough blade, so far.

2. I like the light pockets.

3. The small flashlight is likely a keeper.

4. The jury is still out on the 4-way driver.

5. I have enjoyed the challenge. Even if only as an exercise in self-denial.

thanks for updating this thread frequently. I know i am following it very closely because i have recently changed my edc stuff around to a similiar setup.

I do forsee myself going back to a sak in the long run and keeping a traditional too. Nothing like being a knife knut:foot::)

The edc thing can get as out of control as our afliction of accumulating more knives. I knw one night I emptied my pockets out on the dresser, and Karen was amazed at what was in my pockets. I took a long hard look and downsized my edc. Never missed most of it at all.

Keep it Todd.

Maybe the peanut is just wrong for your hand fit. Maybe try a swayback or small soddie.
