Amu Bill

Uncle Bill,

in Persian we have two words for uncle, let me specify:

uncle maternal side: Dha'i
uncle paternal side: Amu

aunt maternal side: Khale
aunt paternal side: Amme

I would like to call you Amu Bill and not Dha'i bill, though.

Regards,

Manoucher

In many languages the words for familial relations are very similar (most languages use some sort of 'm' word for mother, &.c).

In the case of Persian & Nepali it is particularly expected for the words to be similar, since Persian and the Indo-Aryan languages are closely related (both part of the Indo-Iranian family).

Salaam, Manoucher.

Shoma Farsi baladin?

I figured, given your name.

Be careful how you answer that question, though. Otherwise you'll be subjected to my bad Farsi from time to time.

I'm just learning. I can read the alphabet, but my vocabulary and grammar are very basic.

Anyway, welcome to the Cantina.

My fiancee is originally from Abadan. I thought it would be a good thing to be able to speak to my future in-laws in their mother-tongue. (Plus, I'll be able to tell what they're saying about me.)

Very good idea :)

Same reason I had to figure out some Mandarin (chinese) grammar...
