The Original 0777

Not only am I going to try and buy 2 0777 knives, I am really, really goingto try and finally get myself a 0200. I still don't have that one.

Oh Mshred, CJ, there is probably more to this story, but it's not my story to tell.

It has to do with a former MT customer, one that is interested in auto's (other than MT's). A customer that loves Kershaw and ZT. Lot's of former drama, drama, drama...Seemingly another good reason for Project X.

It's amazing how drama seemingly continually follows some folks around.

Sadly enough Mr Igarashi is quite upset with the Project X. It's never good when Mr. Igarashi gets upset.

And now we're all caught up.

I couldn't believe this when I saw them at NYCKS. I asked tony about it and his story was that: "we worked with the original designer of the knife". I didn't want to say anything beyond that point to avoid a conflict but man, I was stunned to see such a blatant copy.

While it goes against my grain, I'll stay on the higher ground here.

If anyone thinks the SIDIS knife had any influence on the 0777 you're way off base. To think it was the inspiration on Project X, you're stupid.

Wow, he's an idiot for copying such a unique design. Hope he gets sued for it. Kershaw should resume work on their OTF; with their design team they could put out a product that would make MT's obsolete.

What's this about the RAM being discontinued? First I've heard of it...

Trust me, I didn't need to hear an answer from tony to know that it really was just a copy but I wanted to see what he'd say. I too think some sort of legal action should be taken. There is no way they could prove that they "just happen" to look alike.

This is rather sad.... I don't have any MT's, and this won't help me fix that any time soon. In my short time around here, I have grown to like the Kershaw forum, its nice having guys from the company (Thomas W) be consistently generous and sensible. Its made me respect Kershaw, and I don't understand how a knife company can go around doing things like this. Disappointing.

Hi Thomas -

The 777 will stand on it's own as another leap forward in Kershaw / Kai's offerings.

The lawyers will sort it out I am sure, and us knife buyers will know which is which.

I doubt that on a good day this other company could make a dent in either Kershaw's sales or image.

I suppose that is the cross you all bear for being so innovative and breaking new ground in design - copycats.

Thanks for posting - I saw this information in another thread.

I have a genuine 777 on order.

best regards -

Regardless of the blatant copying of the appearance, the craziest thing I notice is the fact that they copied the subframe lock-bar assembly, including the adjustable lock face.
That is much more easily actionable than just the looks.

Yeah, that Select Fire knife has quite a resemblance to a Strider SMF also. Seems odd it came out on the heels of the failed SnG collaboration and won an award this year. KnifeArt even went so far to say the two company’s collabed on the Select Fire, but I'm not so sure of that. I just checked and it still says they collabed on it. "Collaboration between Microtech Knives and Strider Knives. Winner of the Blade Show 'Most Innovative Knife Design for 2011'!"

Now we have this new model that happens to look more like the ZT 777 more than the SF resembles the SMF in shape and dimension. WTF is Microtech thinking?

Well I never had the desire to buy a microtech so far but now I know I definitely never will. Pathetic.

Well said Andy..........

Thomas......... I have four of the new Zero-Triple-Seven's on order with various dealers. That is how taken I was with the knife when I saw it, handled it, and discussed it with Jim at Blade.

I love Kershaw and I have been buying them since I was a boy.
Jim MacNair is a design genius and I look forward to more of his brilliant work in the future. Please do not allow this disgraceful behavior by MT to put you guys off your game in any way.

To date I have purchased seven Microtech OTF's, all expensive top of the line items. The one's I still own will be put up for sale IMMEDIATELY on my forum and I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER. Microtech and it's owner are a disgrace to the knife industry.

BUT ill be the first to admit that the cowry x steel and the tri-wing screw designs have me intrigued. the one thing that is disappointing about the 777 to me is the 440c equivalent steel being used.

Well supposedly it's Cowry Y steel, not Cowry X. I am interested in the statement that it is Cowry Y steel considering that Cowry Y was made in only one Japanese factory (Daido Steel), not available in the US, the production was discontinued years ago, and the last 150 lbs. of it was all purchased by Ken Onion. Post #12 http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/367499-Cowry-y-steel...

Also, why would you want to buy a few different, and most likely expensive, tri-wing screw tips in order to do simple adjustments to the knife when almost the whole knife making world uses standard Torx drivers?

I expect the Chinese to totally disregard patents and IP stuff but this...?

I don't own a MT (and never will) but I hope you folks follow thru with not buying MT stuff. Best way to protest things nowadays is with your wallet.

Okay, maybe we should look at silver linings here. There are several Microtech models that I'll be much more interested in after Kershaw owns them post lawsuit.

More seriously, this is pretty low. At this point I simply will not buy a Microtech knife.

Thomas, your obviously upset by what was posted at Microholics. First off I didnt make or design Microtechs knife, only discussed it since it was a Microtech knife on the Microholics forum. I think both Kershaw and Microtech stand by there own reputations in the cutlery industry. I dont condone what Tony did since it was an obvious clone to the 0777 but I have no control with what Tony or you do for that matter. Only you and Tony know what was said at Blade. Only Tony knows why he built the new Project X. I like both knives and I have 3 0777's on pre-order right now. I tryed to buy a 0777 proto from you at Blade and also through email afterwards with no success. That tells you how much I like the knife! I wish you guys the best with the 0777 and hope it makes it into production soon. (CJ on Microholics)

Thomas you should not let this get you and your people down. Whatever action/s KAI decides to take whether it be legal action or not, would be totally justified in the eyes of many if not all on this forum. Facts like that most of the people who have posted on this thread including me have one or more 0777s on preorder, shows why microtech did this. THE 0777 IS A BEAST!

Thomas, your obviously upset by what was posted at Microholics.
I'm not upset, I'd heard that MT was building some clones a while back. Maybe slightly surprised that they went through with it, but in retrospect... As mentioned in an earlier post, it's Mr Igarashi who's upset. He knows Tony and couldn't believe these actions. It's not good when he's upset. Burned a bridge for sure.

I think both Kershaw and Microtech stand by there own reputations in the cutlery industry.
Agreed. MT reputation certainly is shining brightly here.

Only you and Tony know what was said at Blade.
I explained it exactly in posts above.

Only Tony knows why he built the new Project X.
He's quoted as saying "What the hell, I'm going to make their knife design anyway and beat them to production and make some money"
So now we know.

As to Tony's quote of "doing the right thing" and us scrapping the ZT OTF. Wow, just wow.

As to the only reason we scrapped the OTF project, testing proved OTF's internals failed. All of them, every time.

Appreciated, thanks for the well wishes.

Thanks for the eyeopening revelations Thomas. I'll always support the good guys and so will bladeforums, so please take with you all the love/support the forum has shown and let Mr Igarashi do his thing... I would also like to thank you for being the one to take the high road Thomas, it's the way to go!
