The Phenolic Thread

I always thought the black sawcut 300 series handles were Valox. A quick check of the 2011 catalog lists the black sawcut handle as Valox and the yellow Comfort craft handle as Delrin. I don't know the difference in the two plastics but Buck distinctly names them differently. A few years ago Buck experimented with smooth black delrin on the 300's. They were sold in limited numbers to collectors.

DeSoto,

The early 300s were Delrin and then ten or so years ago Buck switched to Valox. I think it is essentially the same stuff but from a different supplier.

Things I would love see in phenolic...

Bushcrafter. Something like the new Selkirk. Flat ground 420HC. 100 series style handle with bird head pommel and no finger grooves.

Large sodbuster. Silver colored liners, pivot and pins. No shield and flat ground 420HC blade.

Bare head 110/112 with silver liners, pins and bolsters.

I think all of these would be beautiful.

Great and accurate info guys. I once went to look up Delrin and carefully read some of the Goggled threads. You really need to be a chemist/engineer to understand most of it. If we were sitting on the stream bank fishing and you asked me why I 'thought' they changed, my quick and first answer would be "cheaper price". Maybe Valox is easier to deal with in a certain manufacturing process ? I have written this question down on my note card I am going to take to the Blade Show and will quiz Buck folks for answers.

Thanks 300. Among Buck collectors we have some of the most knowledgeable folks visiting this forum. I hesitate sometimes to post something because I know someone will check it out. In order to make sure that's correct. DM

Although I've seen damagte to the handles of knives as well as billard Balls, old phones ect. you really have to abuse this stuff to get it to fracture. It was said earlier but I'll say it again, the nicks and scratches come out and you can really make an old knife look new.

As far as the Delrin/Valox question, has anybody seen the valox handled knives discolor like the Delrin?( Get that white powder look they get when left in the sun)???

Maybe they changed to avoid that break down... Just a thought...

My dream phenolic knife would be a run of the 100 series knives with white phenolic handles and dark gray titanium blades. A tribute to the rare early white melamine 100 series knives only in a handle material that won't crack.

Maybe a slight ivory tint, very slight.
