I have been kicking around an idea for a surface grinder.
Pondering if you could use an Electro magnetic door lock in place of a magnetic chuck? These are used to lock industrial doors and they do not open unless the power is cut or the door is destroyed.

Thoughts...
 
Sounds like it should work. My only thought would be as to how true the surface of the lock would be.
 
This goes back and I may be wrong, but it seems Bob Warner or Geno Denning over on CKD tool area mentioned something like this some time ago.
 
Robert if you go down this path please post results. If this works I will try to emulate your method, cause I sure would like to have a surface grinder. How much do the lock pads cost? Could they be placed next to one another to make a longer chuck?
