Sorry, but that video only reinforces my sense that batonning, done correctly, is a viable and useful skill to practice.
y baton dry dry "rotten" wood common in the wilds that can be broken up easily by hand?
 
In the time it took for him to do all that, I’m pretty sure I could have found some sticks, split off some dry tinder, made some feathers and had my fire. A better one too, that dead crumbly stuff didn't burn all that well. What he did was fine, it worked, but it didn’t show me anything to discount the value of other methods. Ymmv.
