Thoughts on Hinderer Vintage XM-18

With less than 24 hours of owning it, here are some thoughts.

  • Just beautiful and even though it is a tactical knife, it is so in disguise. I doubt people will worry about it if I pull it out.
  • This is my first hinderer and I am loving the detent strength on it. It’s on the stiffer end maybe a 9 out of 10. Which I prefer.
  • I already have some trails on the spine of the blade from just in and out of the pocket. Also the wood handle will dent and wear. I like this, it has a very nostalgic tool/gun feel to it. It feels rustic and like something after using for a lifetime you would be able to pass down.
  • Clip is stiff but that’s fine.
  • It has a nice smell.

Open questions:
  • How rust prone will this be? I plan to use it and don’t want to be afraid here. My plan is to use and keep clean and oiled.
  • Do I really need to buy the tool from hinderer to open it?

I use a #14 spanner bit. Some people report #12 works as well. There is also the people who cut a slot in a penny.

Thanks for the feedback!

I love how hinderer keeps making new stuff. One of my favorite companies. First knife to ever have someone say it smells good lol. There are ways around to disassemble the knife, just gotta be careful because it can scratch the knife. You can dremel a penny, Spanner bit, if your in a pinch the top part of nail clippers.

If they do this to their slip joint I might have to say...

I have a Guinea Hog Forge Piranha in Parkerized O1 that I have not had any rust issues with (I use EDCi on all my knives), but I also have had some light, easy to remove, staining on a satin finished O1 knife after things like fruit.

You don't need a tool. I use a small prybar I have with a nail puller notch that works fine but YMMV. If it's not crazy tight or over locited, a bit of tape to keep the other side still has also worked for me. I use a penny on the screw, the soft copper won't scratch the pivot up, and size wise is very good.

Thank you for the pictures showing the spanner bit in use. Looks to fit perfect.

Great looking knife. I've long wanted an XM-18. Just wonder if this would be the right choice for a 1 and only.

The original XM-18 that got me interested was the Sig Legion color way. Just never cared for the Sig branding.
