Thoughts on the ZT 450 (Zero Tolerance 0450)

I picked up a ZT 450 about 6 months ago when I decided to get serious about sharpening and trying out some "better" knives.
Even though I have been a member here for around 10 years, knives were not really a hobby for me and I sharpened freehand. I have a had a half dozen "good" knives for specific purposes- for hunting (field dressing, breaking bones/breaking down a carcass, and general field use), 2-3 for EDC, 1 for home protection in a state (NJ) that will arrest you for shooting a prowler in your own home, 2 good kitchen knives.

In the past year I've gone through a couple dozen knives and am preparing to get rid of all but a few. The Zero Tolerance 0450 is a keeper. Mine is came in S35VN with red standoffs, but otherwise I think it is stock. I haven't done anything but oil it.

I like the long blade because it's good enough for filleting fish, but no doubt it's also about 1/2" long enough to raise eyebrows for people that don't regularly carry and view a knife as a tool.

The main reason I want to post something is because the action on this one is so amazing- it is the fastest deploying knife I have by far- and the fit and finish is perfect, along with the fact it seems like they got the steel right on this. It stays sharp, and even though it's satin and been carried a bit, not to mention that I got it used, it's still in like new condition as far as looks go.

Finally, the fact that it's all titanium means you can experiment with anodizing which is something I plan to experiment with eventually.
This knife is a winner, definitely made the final cut of what I am holding onto vs. selling. I was surprised to see that people have complained that it isn't smooth, usually there is some variability with a particular model but this at the extreme end of slick and quick, reliable, satisfyingly snappy opening! I don't think I have posted praising any other knife like this for what that's worth- great knife!

The 0450 is a great knife
IMOit is very comparable to the BM 940

i have a 0470 if you want something larger with an upgraded steel (s35vn is already very good)

I got a Ferrum Forge Stinger in Sm-100 and I am convinced I will never want or need another EDC!

Tried one, didn't like the handle. Action was great though, fit and finish was normal ZT. I prefer the 470, but they're both great knives!

It was my first ZT and probably still my favorite. It was also my first "nice" flipper I ever owned, coming from Kershaws.

My only complaint is I had to take it apart to correctly sharpen it (KME) and since it's so thick behind the edge and the factory angle was off it made it difficult.

I also would recommend the 0460ti. I always thought it was ugly but was able to grab one for a deal I couldn't pass up last Black Friday. After carrying it and breaking it in properly it's a gem too.

I like the ZT 0450 so much that I bought a second one.

Great knife! Perfect size, good steel, never know you are carrying. I have not met a job to big for it. I carry it hunting, hiking, shooting, to town and have never felt I need anything bigger. Mine will get razor sharp. I just traded my MT combat troodon for a ZT semi custom 450 in ZDP 189 steel. Yes, I kinda like that model. Lol I am liking the ZT393 to.

ZT 450 is one of the best EDC out there IMHO. I like the sprint runs with interesting steels/handle variations. 450 is the best compact knife in ZT's lineup - action, size, weight are all perfect. The only con is it a bit thick behind the edge, as was mentioned already, - but it is not a deal-breaker considering all of the pros.

Can you thin the edge on these with the diamond stone on the sharpmaker? Mine seems to cut good with the factory edge.

Don't know about the diamond stones but I was unable to sharpen mine on the brown stones.

I had to take it to my KME and unfortunately had to take the knife apart to sharpen it.

Great knife but it was just slightly too small for my hands. It annoyed me that I couldn't a full grip on it, compared to all other knives with a 3.25" blade I've owned. For that reason I sold my 0450 & 0450CF.

I like mine fine, it has terrific action and a nice size, but at the same time, it is packed full of flaws. Most of those stem from slavishly conforming to the knife being a scaled down 0452. Starting at the tip: by leaving the swedge and grind lines the same as it's bigger brother, it leaves the blade very thick behind the edge and makes it a poor cutter. Then we come to the handle: by leaving the same pointy bits that the large 0452 has to correctly position your hand on a huge handle, the little 0450 leaves you with an awkward handle design that keeps you from choking up on the knife at the front and lets the rear pointy act as a huge hot spot right under your pinky. I actually took a belt sander to mine and ground the rear tit off, which made the knife way more comfortable. And finally, it needs a deeper carry clip.
So, nice knife, but it needs a version 2.0 that has a regrind, a redesigned handle, and a deep carry clip.

Also, and I cannot stress this enough, please for the love of pete, stop making the 0450cf (the version I have) murdered out all black with zombie green standoffs. Mine was a gift, otherwise there is no way that I ever would have bought it. I hate black blades, black clips, and zombie green. Anybody know how to strip the green anodization off a standoff? or want to trade their red standoffs for my green ones?

Yes. I've done a few of my ZTs with my sharpmaker diamonds. 470, 801ti, 566, 456cf. The diamond rods handle them with no problem.

I agree. I had all three, but the 0450 is the only one that is still part of my permanent collection. It made the other two knives expendable. The action on the 0470 isn’t close to the 0450 IMO. Actually, the 0450 is the only ZT I have in my collection.

Nice knife but too small IMO.

Sold the only one I had. Prefer the 0452. Have 3 of those. Still looking 4 a 4th and maybe 5th.

This cracked me up since I think the 0450 is small too. It is fine for EDC unless
easily triggered muggles see it deployed. I just got back from the grocery store and
my 0452 was in my pocket! I like my 0462 very, very much as well. Both are nice
full size flippers.
That being said I think the 0450 is wonderful. My 0460Ti gets more pocket time
because I really like how it feels in hand. I prefer 20cv over S35VN too. Action is
epic on the 460 as well since it uses steel washers so the bearings do not run on
the Ti. I find that difference compelling and it is why I prize it as well as my 0470
and 0462. All are 20CV as well.
The 0460 Ti is overpriced...and I would not have it...but DLT sold it to me for less
than my 0450 on black Friday.
