I've found a top of the line mini compass. Just like the one in the handle of my Randall 18.

It is a dry compass with a brass bottom. It has a black or white face(I have several of both) and a 1/2" diameter. I've already put one in the buttcap of my Chris Reeve Mountaineer with the 4" blade. THis compass is very high on the "Cool" meter. I will try to get some pictures posted soon.

If anyone has something really cool to trade I love to swap mail.

the ones in the picture are the ones used by the british SAS. very cool and a big improvement over the plastic ones i have seen.

No actually it has a round white or black face with a contrasting NSEW markings. It is a dry compass like the Marbles compass and just like the one in my Randall 18 from 1981.

I will post a pic when I get my digicam skills up.

Patrick,
What do you think of the small plastic Suunto compasses that are meant to attach to your watchband? I'll admit right up front that they are lacking in terms of their ability to attach securely to a wristband, but the actual quality of the compass itself seems to be pretty high.

the suunto's seem like a good level plastic mini compass. the problem with ones i have used (no name brands) in the past all seem to "yellow" with time or have some kind of little bubble in the liquid. plus the plastic shows some tiny cracks after awhile too. while the plastic version function fine, a little extra in attention to detail always wins in my book.

hey rick,

where di you pick up your mini compass?

Hi
Just thought I would let you know that "Brunton" Compass Co. makes two mini compasses. 15MM and 20MM size. I use them in my Chris reeve Project #1 and Shadow IV. Also in the randall #18. They are good to throw in personal survival kits. Check them out. they are the plastic type. Take care, Al

pm, how does the SAS mini compass attach? I was looking for something to fit on a watch strap or hang from pack strap. Thanks!

the SAS compass is designed to be used "loose", that is, to be put in survival kits, knife handles, etc.

there isn't a way to attach it to a watch/pack strap that i have seen.

i think the plastic types by some companies (like the one which comes with the luminox watches) are the only ones which are made with an "adaptor" for a strap. otherwise models like this one:

come with a split ring which is pretty handy for zipper pulls, etc.
